I have the same problem with Lenovo X60. Changing monitor configuration
when desktop effects are enables causes the display to freeze. I only
get a black screen with a cursor that does not move. The only way to get
out from this lock is to reboot the computer.

The metacity --replace command actually worked. Thanks!
As a side note, I'm getting some weird error messages when I execute the
compiz --replace command. Any ideas (see output below)?

I have the same problem with my machine (also an intel video card). One
way around the freezing behaviour is to turn off compiz before you open
up the display properties box. Alt+F2 and
metacity --replace
beforehand. Then plug in your monitor, configure, apply and run
compiz --replace
Could someone please help me with this, or let me know what further
information I need to provide? I should add that if I start up the
laptop without an external display attached, and then try to attach one,
it freezes the whole laptop, necessitating a hard power down (and I
can't ssh to the
