that's because the nvidia driver failed to compile, so gdm is respawning
fast causing the flicker. X fails to start because you don't have the
kernel driver available.

I booted from a LiveCD to be able to retrieve the requested files, since
the problem causes me to not be able to log in... That also means that
running dmesg will give the result from the running LiveCD, which I
think provides no value here (please let me know if I'm wrong, and you
still want it).
