I'm having the same problem, these are really hard lock ups. Using
identical resolutions is not an option for me, since laptop screen and
flat panel are completely differently sized.

Hi!
I found out that this problem only appears when Ubuntu tries to use both
screens with different screen resolutions.
Workaround: Install aRandr and make layouts (profiles) where your beamer
and Netbook have to use the same screen resoltution.
After plugin VGA saved profiles (.sh files) and
I mean: After plugin VGA *load* saved profiles (.sh files) and enjoy
