X-sessions to freeze (unresponsive keyboard, mouse, etc).
I completely removed openoffice with synaptic and reinstalled. This

Testing the Dell Inspiron 2650 with a Lucid desktop cd...
Pressing any key to get the boot menu, and then using F6 to set acpi=off
seems to do the trick. Of course you loose all the other acpi benefits.

Hi Bryce,
With Lucid I have switched to Kubuntu on that machine. I'm not sure
whether it is possible to retest the original problem in Kubuntu,
because the visual effects are probably quite differently implemtned. I
cannot promise that I have time to install Ubuntu until June, but I'll

I think that hacks/crutches like separate app is very ugly and non-
optimal solution.
Moreover, very good solution already implemented in X for case with
separate displays! Maybe this code should be adapted to virtual desktops
case?
Also maybe these ideas should be reported to mainstream
this bug was reported on lucid. as i dont have the problem on previous
versions. However the apport was done against a different version as it
is a pain to boot up and wait for a timeout due to inactivity and then
be able to work. I will attempt this a bit later.

Sorry Bryce, I'm unable to do a retest as the laptop with the ATI X1400
Gfx chip decided to die on me. I'm now using an NVIDIA based laptop, so
I can't be of any further help here. Perhaps one of the other people
that commented as having this affect them could retest.

Compiz effects loading takes a *very* long time after I login. The desktop
background appears, and gnome-do gets launched immediately, but the menu at the
top of the screen isn't present until the effects start to run,

I logged in with GDM, and pressed ctrl-alt-F1 to access a text console
(which was successful). When I tried to switch VT back to the X session
I saw the screen flicker and after a few seconds the GDM login screen
appeared. The X session was lost.

I believe this bug may now be fixed.
This error does not occur on Lucid with NVidia 9600GT GPU.
Unfortunately I no longer have the ATI Radeon Mobility X600 on which I
originally spotted the bug.
