Same problem here, except that turning of Nvidia 173 always leaves the
'lonely mouse'. Even ctrl-alt-F1 does not show anything and returning to

same problem happend to me on my lenovo netbook with intel 945GM chipset
i think this sucks for linux users who uses ubuntu for the 1st time
especially knowing this is a LTS release it should have been postponed

This problem was present in karmic, upgrading to lucid didn't change anything
and I tried to manually compile the last stable radeon drivers
(xf86-video-ati-6.13.0) and it still doesn't solve the problem.

I have not upgraded to lucid yet, but did you try with and without KMS
enabled? (radeon.modeset=0 as bootparam)
