2013-06-25 Thread Tormod Volden
I am pretty sure it is the same problem and solution in Saucy. Here is a
debdiff for Saucy.

For upstream, I think Cyril's 02- Debian patch is a prerequisite and it
hasn't been upstreamed either, so dualview is simply broken upstream. I
will (re)post that one together with my one on xorg-devel (soon). There
is also a related third patch from Matthieu in December, but that one is
not needed for Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1083032] Re: Video driver not working for Savage chipset

2013-06-22 Thread Tormod Volden
** Description changed:

- [Impact]
- For xserver-xorg-video-savage: Display corruption in X on (at least) Thinkpad
T22 laptops, making the system unusable.
+ [Impact]
+ For xserver-xorg-video-savage: Display corruption in X on all Savage-equipped
laptops such as Thinkpad T22, making the system unusable.
For xorg-server: System lockup on boot.

  [Test Case]
Attempt to boot a system with one of the affected Savage cards; the Thinkpad
T22 is at least one such system.

The display will be corrupted beyond usability.

Install xserver-xorg-video-savage and xserver-xorg-core from proposed,
and you should have a usable X session.

- [Regression Potential]
- The X server patch touches only the DRI1 initialisation codepath; this is not
used for the vast majority of systems, so breakage is low-impact. Breakage here
would most likely manifest as an Xserver crash on startup.
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The X server patch touches only the DRI1 initialisation codepath; this is not
used for the vast majority of systems, so breakage is low-impact. Breakage here
would most likely manifest as an Xserver crash on startup. (Most likely any
driver using DRI1 is broken without this patch, but since DRI1 is mostly used
for mesa and our mesa does not support DRI1 any longer, this is not very
visible. However, the savage driver uses DRI1 for 2D acceleration as well.)

The savage patch switches the default acceleration method to EXA (from
- XAA) and adds some fixes to EXA support. Since we don't build XAA
- support into the X server any more, so switching away from it means
- enabling acceleration, which can cause pretty much arbitrary problems,
- but is unlikely to. In any case, problems would be restricted to users
- of xserver-xorg-video-savage.

+
+ *) The build-without-XAA fallback to no acceleration is broken, so EXA
+ is the best way out of this. EXA has been reported to work well, and is
+ now enabled by default upstream (the patches in this report are from
+ upstream). The user can still disable (EXA) acceleration in xorg.conf,
+ which should work out fine when done this way.

  [Original Report]

When installing 12.10 on our Thinkpad T22 laptops the display does not work.
12.04 works fine.
  xserver-xorg-video-s3 is version 1:0.6.5-0ubuntu1
  xserver-xorg-video-savage is version 1:2.3.6-0ubuntu1
I don't know if these are the packages involved but they are the ones that I
suspect may be involved.
This T22 model (and many other thinkpads from that era) use the S3 Savage
IX8 chipsets.

Using the info from this link makes the display work.
  =
  http://www.physics.wustl.edu/~alford/thinkpad/T23_F17.html

  Xorg :1 -configure
  # ignore Configuration Failed message
  cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file: uncomment Option DisableTile in the
Section Device that contains the Savage driver options.

2013-05-22 Thread Tormod Volden
Thanks! That line 3170 in the patched Ubuntu version is line 3125 upstream:
pMga-RestoreAccelState(pScrn);
Other occurences of this function pointer have been guarded with XAA ifdefs, so
it is only initialized if XAA is available in the server. XAA disappeared after
Precise IIRC so this explains the regression, probably also seen in Quantal.

Jaromir, I have made a patch that hopefully will fix this. I am
attaching a debdiff that can be used for a SRU request if it works fine.
For your convenience I have also uploaded a patched package for Raring
to my PPA. Please test and report back.

2013-05-13 Thread Tormod Volden
Could you create a new upstream release for savage so I can pull this
to saucy?

Maarten, I will also try to sort out some other issues before I make a
new upstream release. Distros can make git snapshots at any point. I
would like you to commit these patches to Saucy because I want to have
them SRU'ed. I can imagine that SRU'ing a new version is almost
impossible, for bureaucratic reason (I mean, never mind that the current
driver is pretty much useless).

Maarten, by the way, I do intend to package a snapshot for Debian soon,
so you can just sync it to Saucy later (I don't think the single Ubuntu
patch for PCI instead of AGP is needed any longer). But before that, it
would simplify SRU if the above patch has been wetted in Saucy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1083032] Re: Video driver not working for Savage chipset

2013-05-12 Thread Tormod Volden
For those of you who are already on Raring (Ubuntu 13.04), I have
uploaded PPA packages (builds in 6 hours from now). To get this fixed in
the official Ubuntu repositories, it is a longer journey. First it must
be fixed in current development version Saucy.

Attached is a debdiff for Saucy (xorg-server).

2013-05-07 Thread Tormod Volden
For Quantal please try the packages from my PPA
https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.series_filter=quantal

You'll need both the new xorg-server 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.3~bug1083022 and
savage 1:2.3.6-0ubuntu1.1~tormod~q packages. You may add the PPA for
simplicity, there are only bug fixes for Quantal anyway. The packages
are queued for building while I write this, so please wait until they
are built before trying (estimated 2 hours from now).

No xorg.conf should be needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1083032] Re: Video driver not working for Savage chipset

2013-03-07 Thread Tormod Volden
22 hours and no response, what a useless testing crowd. I uploaded a
patched xorg-server-lts-quantal to my PPA as well and tested it on my
Precise setup. It now works better when using EXA (kernel module gets
loaded and DRI works). But after a server restart (logout/login) it
locks up again. Without EXA (thus Falling back to shadowfb) it is all
messed up.

baltasarq, I meant EXA without DisableTile. We know already that the
latter works.

Anyway, I got the chance to look at this and was able to reproduce using
the lts-quantal stack. Trying EXA just after XAA had messed up caused a
total lock-up, but after reboot EXA seems to work, although things look
slow.

I talked too soon. EXA wasn't really running because the savage kernel
module had not been loaded (new kernel after I rebooted, since the xorg-

kernel module and restarting (with EXA) I got a full lock-up again.

2013-02-24 Thread Tormod Volden
Michael, thanks for the testing. This is very helpful. Can you please
also attach your Xorg.0.log?

I can not promise to get to this the next few weeks, but the first thing
I will do is to build a debug build of the savage driver (add -DTRACEON
to CFLAGS in debian/rules) both before and after upgrading to xserver-
xorg-lts-quantal and see if something obvious is different in the logs.
If anyone else want to beat me to this, please do :)

I see. Just attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and dmesg output for a start. You
can use the vesa driver by specifying it in xorg.conf but then apport-

didi_X8, I am not sure your crash is the same issue, it seems yours
bombed out in BasicComputeAcceleration() while in this report it is
XIGetDeviceProperty().

The original poster had XIChangeDeviceProperty+40, whereas I got
XIChangeDeviceProperty+440 which is also seen in http://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=681796 (440 = 0x1b8) but I think they are the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-06-14 Thread Tormod Volden
It will be a bit tricky to include the old, non-gallium version of
r200_dri.so in my mesa-legacy package since the default gallium version
has the same file name. Currently the (one) binary package only adds
drivers, it does not replace anything. But we could add a binary package
which replaces certain drivers.

BTW, I can confirm that Radeon KMS is broken on PowerPC and probably
won't be fixed anytime soon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763422] Re: [i965] idle black screen plus other issues Ubuntu 11.04

2012-05-13 Thread Tormod Volden
I am afraid there are many issues being commented on in this bug report
that are not the same, even if they have similar symptoms. If you are
not 100% sure you have the same problem as Jason, please file a new bug,
especially if you are not using the intel driver (the xdriinfo command
should return i965).

Jason, do you still see this with Ubuntu 12.04? Can you log in to a
Ubuntu 2D session instead for a while and see if that helps?

Does xset dpms force off; sleep 5; xset dpms force on turn off the
screen and successfully turn it on again after 5 seconds?

Are you using a particular screensaver hack? Like a 3D one? Or a
random one, in which case you may try out cycling through the different
screensavers until you see corruption. That would also be a driver
issue, although in mesa/kernel, but it would help to pinpoint what
exactly triggers it.

2012-03-20 Thread Tormod Volden
This must be a bug in the graphics driver. xscreensaver just uses standard X11
requests to blank or turn off the screen. You may check if turning off the
screen with DPMS causes the corruption. First stop the xscreensaver daemon:
 xscreensaver-command -exit
Then power down the screen and on again after 5 seconds:
xset dpms force off; sleep 5; xset dpms force on

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570228] Re: Software Rasterizer used on PowerPC system with Radeon card after Lucid upgrade

2012-03-20 Thread Tormod Volden
I can confirm that I get the software rasterizer on current Precise,
running on a PowerBook G4 with a M7 (r100) card. I think this is because
the atyfb frambuffer driver is loaded (compiled into the kernel) and it
blocks KMS from working, which is needed for the gallium mesa driver.
However, when I disable the atyfb driver with the video=ofonly boot
option and use KMS, the machine easily locks up, or goes nuts switching
modes at a rate of around once per second.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 835945] Re: [needs quirk] Hansol H750 giving wrong EDID refresh rate

2011-12-18 Thread Tormod Volden
I think the poor chaps at Hansol have encoded the detailed mode clock
frequency as big-endian instead of little-endian. Swapping bytes 36 and
37 would give a frequency of 125.22 MHz (1280x1024@70) instead of 599.22
Mhz. I have studied a couple of other Hansol EDID dumps but I could not
find any other model having this error.

I therefore made a proposal for a quirk for your model. Can you please test
this kernel?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 905074] Re: corrupted display on dual monitors

2011-12-16 Thread Tormod Volden
This has most likely nothing to do with the xscreensaver application,
but with your proprietary nvidia drivers. I am not sure where those bugs
go (is there a meta package for those, or still dozens of different
nvidia packages?) so I'll redirect this to the xorg meta package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 900111] Re: X server on Matrox g550 is all black (no output)

2011-12-05 Thread Tormod Volden
Please run apport-collect 900111 to attach more information. It would
be nice to also have the xrandr --verbose output from the blind
session.

BTW, I saw this in the log. Do you have the proprietary nvidia OpenGL libraries
installed?
[ 81272.142] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X
driver not found)

BTW2: The misleading lspci information would need to be rectified at
http://pciids.sourceforge.net/
I might look into this some day, since I also have some other IDs to fix up. Is
there any model identifier on the card itself, or in the BIOS messages?

Please file a separate bug for the memory size detection. The driver
does all kinds of trickery to figure out the VRAM size, and this should
be possible to get to work also in your case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 900111] Re: X server on Matrox g550 is all black (no output)

2011-12-05 Thread Tormod Volden
Here is your chance to get back into X development! :) Seriously, having
the hardware at hand is a huge advantage. Meanwhile I have found a
similar bug report here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=546836 where it appears to be a regression since
the old XFree86 server. I have a feeling some of these regressions boil
down to mode calculation being done differently. Maybe the card is
driving your monitor out of range? Did you already try other screen
resolutions and refresh frequencies? You can use xrandr --output
default --mode 0xXX where you can find XX in the xrandr --verbose
listing. Does your screen come back when switching to a virtual console?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 603725] Re: [unichrome] glblur crashed with SIGSEGV in _mesa_meta_CopyTexImage2D()

2011-09-14 Thread Tormod Volden
Danilo, it is still unclear to me whether the issue was fixed by
official packages or if you are still using packages from my PPA. In the
latter case, this means the patch works and needs to be applied to the
official package.

I am still waiting for the output from: apt-cache policy libgl1-mesa-dri

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 835945] Re: Hansol H750 giving wrong EDID refresh rate

2011-08-29 Thread Tormod Volden
Thanks for your (new) report. The old one seems to have been forgotten and
died. The issue here is clear: The monitor is reporting bad data in the EDID.
From the xrandr output you posted in the other report:
 1280x1024 (0x3d) 599.5MHz +HSync +VSync *current
which is also seen in your ddcprobe output:
 dtiming: 1280x1024@392

I believe there is no bug in the drivers, but a quirk (hardware-specific
workaround) should be added for your type of monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 812778] Re: EAGAIN while mapping framebuffer

2011-08-19 Thread Tormod Volden
Do you see this when running sudo radeontool ? Which graphics card are
you using, can you please run lspci -nn|grep VGA? Please attach
/var/log/Xorg.0.log so we see all details. I notice that you are using
the fglrx driver, can this be a problem? Was the fglrx module loaded
when you tried over ssh?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 579071] Re: savage_drv fails drawpix glDrawPixels demo/test/benchmark

2011-06-01 Thread Tormod Volden
I think I have a decent patch going upstream soon:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/830832/

Dewey, can you please test this kernel http://alioth.debian.org/~tormod-
guest/linux-image-2.6.39-3-generic_2.6.39-3.10tormod_i386.deb together
with standard packages of all the rest? The kernel should work in
anything from Lucid to Oneiric.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 670790] Re: Xv / XVideo accelerated video width is limited by / depending on the screen resolution on S3 Savage, but only if the laptop LCD is the primary screen

2011-05-29 Thread Tormod Volden
After looking at it, I think the cast to float in the other code is
overkill, since the result also is an integer, and there is no
intermediate quotient, like in 3*(2/3) = 0. There are parentheses but
even without, multiplication and division goes from left to right so it
is like (3*2)/3 and nothing is lost. The only worry would be if the
intermediate product overflows, in which case a (single) cast to a
higher precision integer would make sense. In our case, dstBox-x1 etc
are screen coordinates so maximum in the order of 1000, and XExp1 etc
(from InitStreamsForExpansion) are up to 0xC. Since XExp1 etc are int,
the multiplication is done with int (at least 32 bit) so it will not
overflow.

For preparing a proper patch there is not much to do, and I can walk you
through it:
 git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-savage # to
retrieve the upstream tree
 (apply your patches)
git commit -a -s # and make a short comment
 git format-patch -o .. HEAD^
Send the resulting file to me for style review if you want. Make sure name and
address in the patch header is how you would like to have it in the git history.

To start with I'd suggest you leave out the +7 removal. The rest is a
good and straight forward fix I would like to apply as soon as possible,
but the +7 removal is a separate issue which is more delicate.

Other improvements to the driver would be very cool! I agree this
hardware is perfectly usable for most tasks. Also the driver took many
years to get in good shape and it would a pity to let it rot. I have no
greater ambitions for its maintenance than to keep it falling into
pieces, but if there are still interested users and developers like you
I will help with what I can. I am not familiar with all of the code, and
I never did much with xvideo or tv-out.

We should maybe take all this somewhere else, but just to comment quickly on
your issues:
- TV resolutions are usually different than for monitors. I think PAL is
720x576.
- Scaling down should work fine with xvideo. Seems to work here.
- I believe the hardware is limited to 1024x1024 (source) for xvideo. So a
movie of 1280x800 can not be scaled down with xvideo on savage.

Unfortunately I have no documentation. Just the savage guide linked from
here: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/S3Savage
