It indeed IS the case for nvidia, I myself seen it on both nvidia and
intel.
Perhaps in more recent ubuntu nvidia's version works better, didnt test enough.
On nvidia it was less likely to happen, perhaps because usually more video ram
(to be used, avoid re-using of not-cleared pixmaps)
For me,
Similar problems occur now, on new drivers, and on newer GFX card -
still nvidia (and intel mobo)

Public bug reported:
After upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10,
on intel quad core on intel mobo, with nvidia GFX,
videoplayers (xvideo?) are showing all movies with invalid Hue, like yellow
becomes green etc.
If I open nvidia-setting and change around hue, then it works ok, untill
restart of program
Now on Ubuntu 9.10 still it seems I can not set any resolution with this tool
(seems unusable for me).

does not work in fullscreen games (like tremulous) - the cursor jumps to
bottom-right if any mouse button is pressed.
This is a changable-DPI mouse, perhaps this is the problem.
