Bunyoro rejects new Buruuli chief

Bunyoro Kingdom has protested Buganda’s intention to install Ms Hajati Nsungwa
as a Chief of Buruuli thereby diposing Isaabarongo Mwogeza Butamanya as the
cultural leader of the Baruuli.

The Bunyoro Kingdom spokesperson, Mr Henry  Mirima, said Buganda lacks the
legality and tools to install a chief in Buruuli. “Bunyoro-Kitara has received
documentary information indicating that Buganda intends to install Ms Nsungwa
as a cultural chief of Baruuli,” he said.

The two kingdoms have lately been at loggerheads over Buruuli, with Bunyoro
claiming that the area originally belonged to them before the British
colonialists annexed it to Buganda because of its cooperation in the fight
against the Kabalega of Bunyoro.

The bickering reached another level when Kabaka Ronald Mutebi was stopped from
touring the area to celebrate his Kingdom’s 46 independence on October 8
because, according to the government, his security wasn’t guaranteed.

The Constitution states that Buruuli belongs to Buganda.
Mr Mirima said Buganda’s ceremony will be meaningless and a violation of
Ababiito dynasty customs and culture if they attempt to install Ms Nsungwa as
its chief in Buruuli. “Buganda government is unashamedly bent on antagonising
and provoking the Baruuli by threatening to do away with the cultural
institution of Isaabaruuli and replacing it with Buruuli bwa Nyangoma,” Mr
Mirima said.

Last month, Buganda Lukiiko passed a resolution to redraw its boundaries which
would include Buruuli. This  did not go down well with Bunyoro.

He said installation ceremonies amongst Ababiito are performed using the royal
regalia of the founding Ababiito ancestors which are today safely kept at
Bunyoro palace. “Buganda government has neither the royal regalia to be used to
perform the coronation ceremony, nor the permission of the Omukama of
Bunyoro-Kitara,” Mr Mirima said. When contacted, the Buganda information
minister, Mr Charles Peter Mayiga, said, “We shall comment at an appropriate
time.”
