Hornsleth back with gallery, hotel project
Pauline Kairu
Jinja
He had a whole village adopt his name, Hornsleth, as their middle name just as
easily as he made authorities in Mukono re-name Buteyongera village after him,
all in the name of art.
Now the latest is that a new hotel on the outskirts of Jinja has been named
after the controversial Danish artist, Kristian Von Hornsleth, the man of the
‘Name for a Pig Project’ fame who was last seen in the country in late 2006.
Invitations to Jinja-based journalists for a Wednesday press conference had
indicated that Mr Hornsleth would be at the event for a pre-opening of
Hornsleth Tropicana Hotel, but come the event, he was nowhere to be seen.
Mr Dirger Wulffeld, who is Mr Hornselth’s associate and manager of the new
hotel, announced that his partner was still stuck in China for an art
exhibition. At the hotel, guests are welcomed by art works most of which is of
pictures of the villagers posing with their new identity cards having his name
in it, which are displayed in the lobby and corridors.
Daily Monitor has learnt that Mr Hornsleth intends to develop part of the hotel
into a fully-fledged art gallery to promote his art works.
Hornsleth Tropicana Hotel, the first outfit in Jinja to fuse an art gallery and
hotel services, will primarily display Mr Hornsleth’s art works though with a
blend of some art by Ugandans. “The Hornsleth exhibition will be a permanent
exhibition within the hotel,” Mr Wulffeld said.
“People from Uganda and abroad can at anytime come and see what actually came
out of the project, Hornsleth was in Uganda last year and created a lot of
confusion all over the world but also put Uganda on the world map,” he
explained.
Mr Hornsleth ‘conquered’ Buteyongera village and neighbouring communities by
offering pigs and goats to any villager who adopted his name. They were then
expected to pose with the newly acquired identity cards which would be
exhibited in art galleries abroad for a fee.
In his last days in the country, the Danish artist is remembered mostly for his
audacious run in with government authorities, including Ethics Minister James
Nsaba Buturo, while attempting to acquire hundreds of passports for his family.
The hotel is officially opening exhibitions on October 1, and according to Mr
Wulffeld, deputy Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has been invited to
officiate. Mr Wulffeld also announced that the beneficiaries in the Mukono
piggery project would have a special day at the Hotel, prior to the official
opening.
“Their testimonies maybe the best way to show the success of the project,”
explained Mr Wulffeld, who has been overseeing the Name for Pig Project, ever
since Mr Hornsleth left the country. “No matter what opinion one could have
about the project, it has saved lives and given new opportunities to the
beneficiaries.”
Hornsleth’s project drew accusations of racism and the government threatened to
arrest him should he return. Dr Buturo later announced that the project’s
license would be suspended, although the villagers did not agree.
In November 2006, the Ministry of Internal Affairs blocked the issuance of 110
passports to members of the Buteyongera Village subscribers to the Hornsleth
project. The passports were to enable the beneficiaries’ to travel to Denmark,
Hornsleth’s home country where he was scheduled to run an exhibition of his art
pieces, which was due to open in Copenhagen then.
