ACHOLI MPs should stop condemning the Government’s pursuit of the LRA rebels, a
Presidential aide has said.
Richard Todwong, the special presidential adviser on northern Uganda, urged the
MPs to instead support the Government.
He blamed the Acholi MPs for what he called “having double-standards on the LRA
issue”.
On Tuesday the Acholi Parliamentary Group asked the governments of Uganda, the
Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan to immediately halt the offensive
against rebels in Garamba forest.
They condemned the attack, saying the Governments should go back to the
negotiating table, arguing that the military option had not resolved the
conflict for over 20 years.
Acholi Parliamentary Group chairperson Livingstone Okello Okello (Chua) accused
the army of killing women and children during the raids to get rid of only
three top LRA officers wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
But Todwong said: “The MPs should not say the bombing is indiscriminate
killing. How come they did not come out to criticise Kony when he was abducting
children?”
He also blamed the leaders and the LRA peace delegation to the failed Juba
talks for not having briefed the LRA leaders on the applicability of the ICC
arrest warrants.
Speaking to The New Vision yesterday, Todwong, urged the Acholi MPs to assure
the residents of northern Uganda, who have been affected by the two-decade long
insurgency, that Kony will never return.
He said Kony’s continued stay in the DR Congo jungles had mounted pressure on
the Uganda government and affected the country’s relations with its neighbours.
Todwong suggested that Kony should be returned to the north alive, to witness
the agony and havoc he has inflicted on the community.
“The MPs should have self-respect. They should take it as a national issue, put
their differences (with Government) aside and stand for the truth. To
sugar-coat Kony makes me believe that some of them are his supporters,” he
said.
