took a shade over 30 seconds to diagonalise, I'm using a 4 year old
AMD 64 3200+.

This is about a calculation with potentially hundreds of parameters. I
don't think that parsing the formula to reduce the number of brackets
will be fast enough to make the exercise worthwhile.
I'm building up the formula in a repeat loop, one operator at a time:

Should work fine - there is nothing magic happening in the datagrid - it's
just a regular group containing copies of your row template - the menupick
handler will work the same way as any group containing a menu button - so
just check your script and make sure you are editing the right one :)

Maybe the wording in the IDE (and maybe the docs) is misleading.
After all, the button in the script editor says 'compile', not just
'save' or 'check syntax'. It might very well be that it is compiled
into some form of p-code that doesn't mean that it needs to be
re-compiled each time
