First, thanks for the very prompt response.
Also thanks for the build instructions. I now have a uml kernel debug
environment.
I was incorrect in stating the uml version. I am installing uml
2.6.18-1um-2, not 2.6.8.
Here is the apt-get log showing the problem I mentioned,
