If you don't want to deal with dependencies, then install the LO from the
Software Center, and stop whining. If you want a different version, then
learn how to read, handle dependencies, work from the command line, and
stop whining.

If you find Linux and LO so offensive that you have to publicly whine like
this instead of asking meaningful questions about a particular prorblem, I
suggest you purchase Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and pay for a
support plan so you can complain to someone in India or Ireland about your
problems.

Linux (and life) is about learning to help yourself.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Basic Calc Question

2015-04-13 Thread Mark Phillips
I don't understand the references to a conditional statement and the
reference to 0. But, to create a running balance, you just use a sum with
the first cell anchored. For example, assume entries are in the first
column, A starting at A1, and you want the running total in column B
starting at B1. B1 would have the formula =sum($a$1:a1). Then copy this
formula into the cells below B1, and you will have a running total of the
numbers in column A. Try it and you will see how it works.

b1 has =sum($a$1:a1)
b2 has =sum($a$1:a2)
b3 has =sum($a$1:a3)

and so on.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Currently Using Spreadsheet for Personal Project - Thinking About Database

2014-08-11 Thread Mark Phillips
Joel,

A suggestion from left field, but it will help you in the long run. Take a
look at the django project - https://www.djangoproject.com/. It is a
framework for creating database driven web sites. It is very easy to use
and very powerful. The framework automatically creates all the plumbing you
need to build a project (such as database tables), and allows you, the
designer, to focus on the higher level problems of your design (what the
page views should look like). The user community is very helpful. There are
also many inexpensive hosting options for a public facing dajngo project,
or you can just run it locally on your own machine.

Try the tutorial and you will see how easy it is to use -
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.6/intro/tutorial01/.

Good luck!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Currently Using Spreadsheet for Personal Project - Thinking About Database

2014-08-11 Thread Mark Phillips
Calibre is also a great idea/solution for this project, unless one of the
goals of the project is to learn about databases and how to use a database
to solve a real world problem. I added the second clause, because just
learning about databases an admirable goal, but imo, one also should learn
how to build the bits that allow an end user to create/read/update/delete
data in the database. Django is one vehicle for doing this. Paul, I have to
disagree with your analysis of django...I have worked with many
non-programmers on building useful projects with that framework. There is a
learning curve, but it is not insurrmountable by a non-programmer. ymmv.

On Mon, Aug 11, 2014 at 3:26 PM, Paul paulste...@afrihost.co.za wrote:

 Hi Joel,

Some comments on your diagram, in the order I thought of them, not of
 importance:

 1) I tend to use integers for primary keys. Smallints only go into the
thousands, and most of the stuff I have worked on has needed to be able
to scale well beyond that. Even things that seem small to start with
have a habit of growing unexpectedly, and you don't want to have to
change your database design down the road for something small like
 that.

Planning ahead really is the name of the game with databases, as
half the reason we use them to begin with is to handle things that
have grown beyond our simple spreadsheets, or that are expected to
become unwieldy in the future. The whole point of a good design is
that it should handle this sort of thing. And the extra storage space
really shouldn't be an issue. For example, a quick estimate
suggests that using integer instead of smallint for keys in the diagram
you gave will only use an extra 1 mb of storage space if you go all the
way up to the limit of the smallint range, and beyond that it is
academic as you would be *required* to use int instead of smallint.

But for a home project you're unlikely to exceed that number, so this
is fine. It's just worth being aware of this when designing it, so that
you know the choices you have made, and why you have made them.

I would make them unsigned smallints, though. Not really a good idea to
use negative numbers for keys, and so making them signed just wastes
 half their range.

 2) I wouldn't put a Read flag in the Book table. You have a Status
table with a ReadStatus, so this would be duplication of data.

 3) Same with the SeriesComplete flag in the Series table. You can get
that information by doing a query that would check if all the books in
the series are in the read status.

It's usually much better practice to generate this sort of information
as you need it from the relevant pieces of information in the database
(assuming you have all the required pieces in the database), than to
store this information a second time, which is just duplication. Even
if the space wasted isn't important, it just leads to the possibility
 of the data being inconsistant.

The only time one stores such things is when the actual calculation to
work this out from the pieces of data takes so long that it is actually
necessary to store calculated results to save time in the application.

 4) Same with AuthorID in the Series table. Each book will have an
author, so you don't need a series author. That way if the books in the
series are written by different authors everything still works. This
way, who would the series author be, and how would that be any
different from the authors of the individual books?

Note that you can still show this information in the frontend when
viewing the series. You can make a query to check if the authors of all
the books in the series are the same, and if so show that author, but
if they are different just show various or something.

Also, when entering all the books in a series, you can still have the
frontend ask you for the series information first, including author,
and if you fill it in then it will prepopulate the author field when
 adding each book.

Of course, maybe you actually do have a use for a series author as
separate to the authors of the individual books, so maybe this does
make sense to you, it just doesn't seem right to me.

 5) Some people want author names to be a single field, which is simpler
for some things, and avoids hassles with authors with multiple names,
and other people want them to be a name and surname field, which does
mean you can do things like order by surname or order by first name. And
avoids the problem of you sometimes entering the name surname first and
 sometimes first name first.

With the name split into parts it is easier to check if the author
exists by both name and surname when entering new authors, so even if
you mistype one of them the author will still be found if they are
already in the database, but this can still be done if the name is all
in one field, it is just harder. You can also still sort the author
list by surname and by first name, it is just harder if both are

Re: [libreoffice-users] Labels

2012-03-25 Thread Mark Phillips
Sylvain,

Go to avery.com, look for the software tab, select design and print online.
All the labels are there, you can import from any database, and you print
on your desktop printer. It just works.

 Hi Sylvain,

None of that is necessary with the table style templates.

The labels in what? What are you using to format them? What part of
LO are you using? With more specific information, someone might be able
 to help you.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Address Books

2012-03-16 Thread Mark Phillips
Stephanie,

Take a look at google apps. You get a free account as a non-profit with
your own domain (not gmail.com). It has address book, email lists, document
sharing, members, calendars, etc. All accessible over the internet. You can
publish your organization's web site through here, if you want. Everyone in
your organization would have an email address
your_name@your_organization.org, or whatever your domain name is. If you
don't have a domain, go to godaddy.com and register one for around
$10/year.

See - http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/nonprofit/index.html If you are a
U.S. nonprofit organization of over 3,000 users, you are now eligible
for Google
Apps for Business http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html at
a 40% discount ($30/user/year). If your organization is under 3,000 users,
you can apply for the free Google Apps for Education through the Google for
Nonprofits site.

I did this for my non-profit (I have less than 3,000 users), and it has
been very helpful. Note: a user is someone who works in your organization;
not one of your donors.

I am envisioning something where we can't see all the information right
when we open it. I'd like it to be some kind of format where we have to
click on a tab or something to view each member's information, and they
would have an entire page dedicated to them. Is that possible to do?

 Thank you,

[libreoffice-users] Calc DMIN Question

2012-02-08 Thread Mark Phillips
I have a table of running times in one sheet called 'times'. The table has
row headings name, first, second, home for the player's name, the time
running to first, the time running to second, and the time running home.
For example:

*Player* *Date* *First* *Second* *Home*
Player 1 08/14/11 3.54 7.63 15.54
Player 2 08/14/11 3.50 7.57 15.06
Player 3 08/14/11 4.10 8.07 16.40

In another sheet I have a table where I want to calculate some values (Min,
Max, Avg) from the raw data in 'times', so I need to use DMIN and DMAX,
DSUM, and DCOUNT. The table for the fastest time looks like:

*Fastest Times* *Player* *First* *Second* *Home* Player 1 3.25 6.88
13.73 Player
2 3.28 6.78 13.46 Player 3 3.28 6.84 13.25

To calculate the min time for a player, I set up an auxiliary table as in
the help examples, with table headings and field number from the 'times'
table for the DMIN function

C D E F 32 *Fields:* *3* *4* *5* 33

34 *Player* *First* *Second* *Home* 35 Player 1

 36

37 *Player* *First* *Second* *Home* 38 Player 2

 39

40 *Player* *First* *Second* *Home* 41 Player 3

To calculate the fastest time for player 1 I use =DMIN(times, D32,
C34:F34). Using this approach, I need a set of search criteria for every
player. Is there a way to use the player's name in the first column of
the Fastest Times table as part of the search criteria, so I don't need to
make a separate search criteria for every player?

Thanks!

Mark

Select your list including column headers.
 DataPilotStart...
 Drag players into [Row Fields]
Drag times into [Data Fields], double-click, change Sum to Min

Thanks for the recommendation - I have never used pivot tables and after
some experimenting, I got it to work.

I am puzzled by one part. I want to sort the table of min values for first
from lowest to highest, but I cannot find how to so that. In the OO docs,
it says right click in the pivot table and select properties, but I don't
have that option (
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Calc_Guide/Results_2).
How do I sort the data in LibreOffice?

Thanks,

Mark

One method is use INDIRECT(TEXT(ceelwithdate;**MMM D).A1:g14) to
 compose the address.
