[libreoffice-users] scalc (LO 7.2) how to bind borders overwrite

2024-01-16 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

I frequently mark a region of cells then click on the border menu and
select the option to add borders to all cell.

Since I don't like to click on menus I tried to bind «overwrite borders»
to a key Crt-F11.

Indeed when I go with the mouse of the menus a small window pops up
telling overwrite border (Crt-F11) however when I press CRT-F11 nothing
happens, I again need to click on that menu.

Is this a bug?

[libreoffice-users] Scalc I cannot merge cells, also I selected and unprotected them

2023-10-11 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

I have a document with several sheets, I selected some cells on a row,
made sure they are unprotected, and then selected the merge option,
however that option remained in grey and could not been selected.

What is the problem here?

In a new scalc document I have no problem to merge cells, so what could
be the reason?

I think I will try this out now. Do you mean my table1
the name of the sheet, so to distribute the various tables in different
sheet our does there exits a table name (and I don't know where to find
it.) So that I could have different tables on the same sheet?

[libreoffice-users] split a huge table in subtables (say on different sheets) and link some columns between these tables???

2023-10-03 Thread Uwe Brauer
Hi

I am facing the following problem, I work with a table with 6 rows but
56 columns. Of course I can hide some columns but I find this not very
comfortable.
So the question is can I split this table say in 8 tales, each with 7
columns.

In each table the last column gives me a result of certain operation,
say

#+begin_src
#+Name: table1
| Name  | Ex1 | Ex2 | Ex2 | Ex4 | Ex5 | ResSh1 |
|---+-+-+-+-+-+|
| Smith |   2 |   3 |   4 |   6 |   7 | 22 |
#+TBLFM: $7=vsum($2..$6);f2

#+Name: table2
| Name  | Ex1 | Ex2 | Ex2 | Ex4 | Ex5 | ResSh2  |
|---+-+-+-+-+-+|
| Smith |   1 |   3 |   5 |   8 |   9 | 26 |
#+TBLFM: $7=vsum($2..$6);f2

#+Name: final
| Name  | ResSh1 | ResSh2 | Total |
|---+++---|
| smith | 22 | 26 | 48|
#+TBLFM: $4=vsum($2..$3);f2

#+end_src

So that every time I actualise any column in any table, that
table gets updated and the final one

Is this possible. It is possible in emacs org mode with its table
spreadsheet, however my colleagues use either LO or Excel, so it would
be great if this were possible.

BTW is html mail possible/allowd on this lis?t (that would simplify the
display of my tables)

Thanks and regards

Re: [libreoffice-users] how to generate a re-scaled column

2023-10-02 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

Thanks very much for your answer, it helped me a lot, but let me reply

> Where you have B1/max(A2:A7), I actually expected it to be A2:A8, but

You are absolutely right! I was so distracted (and annoyed that out of
the sudden the entries in the max function changed (you explained below
why this is so), that I did not pay attention to the other changes that orrur

So the behavior I wanted to report should be like this

| A | B  |
|---+|
| 7 | =A1/max(A1:A7) |
| 2 | =A2/max(A2:A8) |
| 3 | =A3/max(A3:A9) |
| 4 ||
| 5 ||
| 6 ||
| 1 ||

While I wanted

| A | B  |
|---+|
| 7 | =A1/max(A1:A7) |
| 2 | =A2/max(A1:A7) |
| 3 | =A3/max(A1:A7) |
| 4 ||
| 5 ||
| 6 ||
| 1 ||

Now you already gave me the answer, using $. I tried this before sending
the question, but not with the correct syntax!

So the correct way of doing this, is:

| A | B|
|---+--|
| 7 | =A1/max(A$1:A$7) |
| 2 | =A2/max(A$1:A$7) |
| 3 | =A3/max(A$1:A$7) |
| 4 |  |
| 5 |  |
| 6 |  |
| 1 |  |

So I learned something very important thank you again.

Now to the «dragged a formula»
this is basically the same as you do via copying and pasting.

So if I go back to my original question:

| A | B  |
|---+|
| 7 | =A1/max(A1:A7) |
| 2 ||
| 3 ||
| 4 ||
| 5 ||
| 6 ||
| 1 ||

So I have just defined a formula in one cell. Instead of copying and
pasting, I take the mouse at the right lower corner
=A1/max(A1:A7)
 ^(mouse)

And drag it down obtaining

| A | B   |
|---+-|
| 7 | =A1/max(A1:A7)  |
| 2 | =A2/max(A2:A8)  |
| 3 | =A3/max(A3:A9)  |
| 4 | =A4/max(A4:A10) |
| 5 | =A5/max(A5:A11) |
| 6 | =A6/max(A6:A12) |
| 1 | =A7/max(A7:A13) |

[libreoffice-users] how to generate a re-scaled column

2023-10-02 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

I have the following simple table

| Marks | Scaled  |
|---+|
| 1 ||
| 2 ||
| 3 ||
| 4 ||
| 5 ||
| 6 ||
| 7 ||

In the column scaled I want each value from column Marks, divided by the
maximum of column marks which is 7.

So I thought

| Marks | Scaled |
|---+|
| 1 | =A1/max(A1:A7) |
| 2 ||
| 3 ||
| 4 ||
| 5 ||
| 6 ||
| 7 ||

That gives the correct entry for B1, however if now, drag with the mouse
down that formula I obtain

| Marks | Scaled |
|---+|
| 7 | =A1/max(A1:A7) |
| 2 | =B1/max(A2:A7) |
| 3 ||
| 4 ||
| 5 ||
| 6 ||
| 1 ||

Which is not what I want.

That is a very elementary question, but google does not help me.
regards

Thanks for your answer. The only problem with this approach, is if I
want to delete something. I understand that according to the logic of
recorded changes, a deletion must be displayed.

However in my workflow, I would like just silently delete text. I can
set deleted text to a white font, but then a gap in the text would
appear.

There seems no simple way to avoid this.

Hi

In an already existing odt document I would like to add some text,
however that text should always appear in red (say for corrections).

When I switch to a red font, and set the cursor to a new line, I again
have to activate red.

How can I configure libreoffice so that only new texts appears in red?

Is this a BUG or a feature.

[libreoffice-users] libreoffice headless import cannot deal with utf8 csv files

2022-07-11 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

This looks like an absurd issue.
I am on Ubuntu 16.04 using LO 7.2

I start with a csv file that contains is saved as UTF8.

I convert it to ods via the command line

/opt/libreoffice7.2/program/soffice --headless --convert-to ods --outdir .
test1-utf8.csv

The resulting ods file has corrupt codification.

I convert the same csv file but now I open it it directly in scalc and
then convert it explicitly to ods, everything is fine.

I tired the same with latin1 and there is no problem.

I attach the files.

Any comments? Is this known, shall I send a bug report?

Hi

I swear I have seen a version control of sorts[1], maybe back in the old

the size of the file quite a bit because new versions were saved on top
of old ones.

I cannot find this feature anymore. Is it gone?

Yes if you only work with odt documents. But if you force to deal with
docx and you run into problems, that feature might be useful.

If I remember correctly sxw was a lot like odt, styles included, the
changes between both was mostly name conventions of the tags etc, but I
am not completely sure.

But right wordperfect has a different approach then OO or even word, but
may that reveal code feature could work for those documents which take
more a visual approach and don't rely much on styles.

BTW I just remembered there is a app called cross eyes for Word 2011,
which has some reveal functionality and Word 2011 used already xml based
file formats.

Right, you have to select a paragraph and then the formatting code was
revealed, but it was by no means updated when you wrote, or something
like this.

I still consider it as very useful (I know one of the macros had a
result which looked closer to WP than the others, but I don't remember which
of the 3 macros it was)

[libreoffice-users] Reveal code, old macros convert them to LO

2019-07-04 Thread Uwe Brauer
Hi

>From time to time the question pops up whether LO could support
Wordperfects reveal code. The developer are not too keen, and sometimes
it is stated that this feature could be implemented by a
macro/extension.

Now I remember that long time ago such macros existed and using the
wayback machine I found them. They were written around 2005 for OO 1.2,
using the sxw format.

I tried them out in LO 6.2 and they don't work.

Is there somebody with enough knownledge in macros to translate those
macros to LO 6.2?

Thanks and regards

Nothing helped, thanks.

 I presume it is something wired with the fields in the table, the way

[libreoffice-users] MS word doc with tables: spell check does not work

2018-08-03 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and either libreoffice 5 as shipped by Ubuntu
or libreoffice 6, installed by myself. The problem is the same in both
versions. I have installed in both version the relevant dictionaries,
spanish/english/german.

And in both I can run the spell checker on a new odt document.

However I am facing the following problem:

I open a MS doc document, which contains a large table which I have to
fill in. I type a word in spanish, mark it, and press F7 for spell
checking. The word is ignored since no dictionary is chosen.

1. So I try to set spanish myself, but this is impossible.

2. I mark the whole document--> select right mouse--> select char-->
   select font--> select spanish. No effect.

I am really puzzled, I googled and did not find any answer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes and no.

That is after some trouble I found out that I convert cvs with . For
decimals to xlsx which are read correctly by LO and Excel.

However there is an issue.

When I convert csv (and you might ask why I use them, for simple tables
I use emacs org mode (with a poor man spreadsheet, which exports to
csv).

Then I convert it either opening the file with LO and exporting to xlsx
or on the command line with gnumeric

ssconvert example.csv example.xlsx

What does not work, is the command line converter of LO,

/usr/bin/soffice --headless --convert-to xlsx test.csv

the decimals
are fine but the non ascii chars are encoded incorrectly. See my message
sent some weeks ago.

I tried that but I am not entirely sure it worked flawlessly. It seems

Ok maybe I mixed CSV with excel files and that is where my confusion
starts. You are right the xlsx format seems pretty save.

Still the excel files, when opened in excel contain cells with small

[libreoffice-users] scalc interchange ods between english and spanish

However I have to interchange the documents with my colleagues which
using the Spanish version (of excel) so I must send xlsx or xls format
anyhow.

How I can I ensure that the spanish excel version of my colleagues
interpret 3.4 as a number, since in Spanish the convention is either 3,4
or 3'4?. I hoped that could be internally solved without any
specification but it seems not to be the case.

Any suggestion would be welcome. Thanks

[libreoffice-users] saving as csv newline inserted

2017-06-21 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hi

I have an excel (xls) file which I open with scalc (5.3)
and save it as csv

Unfortunately it looks like

Field1,Field2,Field3,Field4,Field5
"Name","05329954A
   ",0.55,0.75,1.3

Instead of

Field1,Field2,Field3,Field4,Field5
"Name","05329954A ",0.55,0.75,1.3

The reason is that in the first column there is a after name a space
which is translated to a newline when exporting.

How can I get rid of this unwanted newline?
I tried to format the cells but it seemed not to have worked.
Thanks

[libreoffice-users] problem with import of excel file, cells contain new lines

2015-02-17 Thread Uwe Brauer

Hello

I periodically receive excel files (generated by Office 2010 I think,

Some of these columns cause me problems, since they seem to contain spaces

contains hundred of lines this is cumbersome.
So the question is whether there exist any formating function which
could resolve the issue.

I attach an (shorted) example of the problem and would appreciate any

If the same shortcut key is defined for both, the one for an

Writer, Ctrl++ is assigned to Calculate and Ctrl+- is assigned to
Optional hyphen (at least for me). If you assign those keys to zoom
in and out at the LibreOffice level, they will not have that effect
when in Writer; you'd need to remove the assignments from the Writer

I know, and that is why I tried out other bindings such has Alt+F2

I am using LO 4.2. Did you try it out, successfully? If so which version

libreoffice 4.1.2.3. I also cannot enter niqqud, at least they are not
displayed.

Is this a bug or something changed in the configuration?

thanks

I take it that you are using InnoDB engine in your mysql db ?

Aha, good question.

Well show engines;
showed

InnoDB | YES | Supports transactions | YES  | YES  | YES

So I presume the answer is yes.

Otherwise, e.g. if you are using myisam or heap as the default engine,
relations are not supported by mysql, i.e. they are not enforced
(although they can be stored as a textual reference).

This is true whether you are using ODBC, JDBC or the native mysql
connector to reach your tables from within LO.
A question, can you set various relations between tables, using mysql
and they are saved?

 Perhaps you need to learn more about primary keys, foreign keys,
and the relationship that must exist between them. Another topic that
would help is normalizing tables. Still another topic is constraints
that must be applied to either type of keys. (This one really goes to
the error message you got. (I make these suggestions because it is
what I had to do to understand tables in a relational database.)
Yes of course, I desperately need to learn more. But the issue is that
the GUI seems only to set and save relations between primaries keys. Did
you try it out via the GUI, what is your experience?

 I am a little curious. Your email address implies you may live in
Spain.

Yes, I do.

Your name looks German to me. If you are German, then there is
a Base Handbook written in German that you might be able to use.

Yes again, I am German.
Tom might be able to tell you from where to download it on the
LibreOffice wiki if that would help.
That would be extremely helpful. I googled around of course but mostly
found old material (2007/08).

 As far as MySQL problems, I think I tried to modify fields in a
table while using MySQL. They were not saved either.

Aha so there is a problem?!

 How do you define an intrinsic database? I do not understand
 the term.

Well in my understanding there are two possibilities,

- either Base can connect to an external database such as mysql via
   a number of drivers or

- it uses a database it ships (I think it is based in
   hsql). Because of a lack of a word I denoted this as intrinsic.

 Primary-foreign key pairs are created when a table is
normalized. (There several levels of normalized tables.) These pairs
are based upon the relationships between the fields of the original
table.
 So, you probably should put all the fields of the two tables into
a single table with the exception of any fields that belong to both
tables. For example the single table contains only one primary key
(ID) and one field named Notes. Then look for any fields (other
than ID) that determine the values of other fields. (In other words,
begin to normalize the table.) Without knowing all of the fields that
you are using, it would be difficult to know what fields these might
be.
 FYI, very seldom will two tables have a 1:1 relationship (linking
the primary keys of the two tables). Very likely, yours doesn't
either. Most often, these relationships involve a primary key of one
table and a foreign key of the other.

I am not entirely sure I understand: I set up a new base, no the primary
keys are not any existing field of the table (autovalue is On)

My tables are the following (they are just toy models in order to
understand the relation ship concept)

Task:
Name Type
Id (generated by OO as a primary key)
Task Id Integer
Description Memo Longchar
Notes Memo Longchar

Authors
Name Type
Id (generated by OO as a primary key)
Author Id Integer
FirstName Memo Longchar
Nationality Notes Memo Longchar

Now I try to make a relation between the two tables, and in the GUI I
select the field Task Id and Author id in the other table, since both
fields have the same type.

I receive  the following error:

SQL Status: 23000
Error code: -177

Integrity constraint violation - no parent 1, table: Authors in
statement [ALTER TABLE Authors ADD FOREIGN KEY (AuthorID)
REFERENCES Tasks (ID)]

Now the gui allow me to add more fields so I add both primary keys, gain
an error:
SQL Status: S0011
Error code: -170

Primary or unique constraint required on main table: Tasks in
statement [ALTER TABLE Authors ADD FOREIGN KEY (AuthorID,ID)
REFERENCES Tasks (TaskID,ID)]

The only one which works, using the GUI is between the primaries keys!!!

Did you try it out your self and you are able to set more relations
between the tables?

As I said, in another mail, when I connect the data base to mysql via
ODBC then I can set more relations, but they are not saved..

Hi Uwe,

I am puzzled, in the intrinsic database only relations between
primary keys are possible?? Is this a property of the intrinsic
database, or is it a bug? I am thinking of submitting a bug
report.

The following possibilities occur to me :

(a) you might need to drop your previously configured constraint
before you can set up a new one via the GUI. From what I recall,
this might only be possible manually, i.e. by issuing a SQL command
(menu Tools SQL) to DROP the CONSTRAINT from the tables, then
shutting down the db file, closing LO completely and re-opening.

(b) you might not be able to set combined constraints on more than one
field in both tables simultaneously via the GUI - again you may
find that you have to do this manually (although it may actually
turn out to be a limitation of hsqldb 1.8, I haven't checked)

This is my impression. Even when I generate for the first time a
relation ship via the GUI, I can only have the primary keys, if I put
more field in the relation it fails.

And if I just set it up for the primary keys and later edit, same
result.

I think it is time for a bug report.

[libreoffice-users] how to insert enumerated comments.

2012-04-21 Thread Uwe Brauer
Hello

Ms word 2003 inserts comments which are automatically
numbered. I cannot find a similar feature in libreoffice
(3.4) nor can I find a extension which does this.

Does anybody know about it?

Thanks

Uwe Brauer

BTW when I open a word document with such comments the
numbers are *not* displayed (RTF or 2003 doc binary format).
