I'm trying to create mail merge documents that contain merge fields for
a document that can't connect directly to the data source. That source
(Salesforce) can read the documents if the field names are correctly
entered. I can type the field names in manually, but I can't figure out

Turn off View---Field names. It sounds like you have this toggled on.

After some experimenting it seems to me that if I set up a Writer
document to link to a csv file as its datasource it stays with
exactly that file. If I try to include new data by making a new
version of the merge file (ie, exactly the same name), I don't get
the new data, only the old data

When I do mail merges, I use the "Data Sources" available from the View
menu (Ctrl+Shift+F4) to select my data source and filter what I want to
use for the merge, and then to activate the mailing wizard (
data). I have multiple baskets each

I have not found any way to process an email merge to the point of
customizing the individual email content, saving the customizations and
then emailing the merge in a subsequent session of LibreOffice.

We have been using a combination of OpenOffice and Windows 7 for quite
some time to send out a newsletter. A couple of months ago, with
nothing changed that we could spot, the mail merge function stopped
working.
After opening Tools/Mail Merge Wizard, we can select starting document

I have filed this bug because I can not get LibreOffice to test
the settings I enter into
Tools Options LibreOffice Writer Main Merge. It freezes everytime.

Using LibreOffice after some years under OOo...
The Mail merge has an option to save the merged documents into one
single document OR into individual documents, with some parameters to
give an individual name to each doc...
But this does NOT work, it does only create one single document
