Perhaps not a main answer to your questions but keep in mind (or get it as new information) that you have about 2^46 local self defineable IPv6 addresses per subnet available. With an IPv6-enabled Apache it's possible to bind each virtual host on its own IPv6 address i.e. www1.domain1.com :

Therefore IPless virtual hosting is no longer necessary on IPv6 (good for SSL!). I thought IPless virtual hosting is no longer necessary due to HTTP 1.1 Host: header. is my understanding correct? oops, I wrote it backwards - IPless virtual hosting already works fine
