It's okay in FreeBSD. If an unit number is not specifyed, an unit
number is assigned automatically.

I suspect that gif is not installed as a cloneable interface in your
kernel correctly. I have no idea why it occures.
Please try `ifconfig -C'. It shows list all of the interface cloners
available. Here is mine:
