Russell Vincent is porting the Diablo newsserver software to IPv6 at the moment and came up with a little question. Diablo is logging the poster's address and the remote port to its X-Trace-Headers like X-Trace: 2001:768:1001:1::218:3456 (coming from machine 2001:768:1001:1::218 port

I actually rather like that format. That sort of notation saves two characters (no opening bracket, no post-closing-bracket colon), and feels far more succinct/elegant to me than the cuddling square bracket/colon format. On the other hand, there's the argument that a # sign followed by
