I have set alt-charset = utf-8 and also sending charset = 'utf-8' via
sqlbox. But '@' is shown as '!' to my customers.
Please suggest.

Weird. What's the kannel version you're on?
I've just tested (I'm also using sqlbox) via inserting the record into
send_sms with @ without specifying charset or coding it works just fine.
