a SMSC on the PDUs:
* bind_transceiver_resp
* submit_sm_resp
I already defined the TLVs on the configuration and the log indicates
kannel does receive the data, but how can I retrieve it to an external
application

In kannel web page there is a link to the mailing list messages. Do a
search on CMGR or CMGD.
This commands allows you to check/manage messages in phone sim/memory.
You can algo place the sim on any phone and read/delete the messages
from the phone itself.

Always CC kannel list.
Then it might be a "hadware" issue. Check that the device is not
locked with your VM. a device/port can not be used at the same time by
the host and the VM.
Again, CNMI tells modem to forward sms to kannel. If you do not see
anything on kannel, then modem is not sending

CNMI is the command that tell modem to forward incomming sms from
modem/phone to Kannel. Therefore, you need to check it. Note that
config might different for different brands/models. Check user
manuals.
An option is to use sim-buffering and message-store comands to tell
kannel to periodicall
If you are trying MT messages, Check if port is open.
