No backup no documents unfortunately.
So in a nutshell your documents are gone.

AOO can read .docx but not save ( at least my install). I think Libre
Office can do both.
If I get a .docx file that I need to modify I just save as .doc and the
receiver can read the .doc file.
Others more learned can explain the difference between .doc and .docx.

"System" means which operating system you are using.
In your case it is Windows.
