Laura,

You probably need to download the latest version. Apache OpenOffice has been 64
bit for MacOS for awhile. Make sure you read and follow all the release notes
so that you can successfully negotiate the Gatekeeper. ONLY download from:

When I upgraded to Catalina, OO worked fine. What version of OS did you migrate
from? What version of OO are you using? When you say “not working,” describe
what is happening.

Again, OO works fine on Catalina on my 2017 iMac.

You will need to reinstall OO on the new machine from the Apache site.
Presumably you have been backing up the old machine to an external drive - so

Re: Configuration Control Issue

2018-11-03 Thread chuck ef
Oh I understood their purpose from your previous email (although it seems like
an odd way to do CM - seems like that should be handled outside of the app). I
was just not aware of their existence.

I have no idea why the backup process is capturing them, although they are not
as hidden as one might suspect. I suspect I am doing something incorrectly.

As for the reason you gave below, those are exceedingly uncommon on my end - so
it is a mystery to me why so many were left behind.

I know that OO would often crash when I would try to open it the first years I
used it - but I long ago made the app open up at boot up. It only rarely
crashes now, and never while I am editing the .ods files. So I do not know
where they all came from.

It’s just interesting to me - and a reminder to try the backup files once in a
while.

Just to satisfy the intellectual curiosity the .lck files are not backup

Lock the file by being opened for write by someone else. The only reason
one should be left behind is if AOO terminated abnormally. The most
common reasons are because of a power surge or power failure or by

It sounds like AOO did not release the lock file for some reason. The
first think to do s check the directories on each disk that you opened
the file from and see if there is a file of the form.~lck.filename.ods.
If you find one delete it and then try to open the file again.

Configuration Control Issue

2018-11-01 Thread chuck ef
So, as I mentioned in an earlier email, I bought a new iMac and it is using
10.14.1 (Mojave). I have been in the process of setting it up with files from
the old iMac. I use two backup eternal drives (for redundancy). I just today
put those files onto the new machine (USB-C is wonderful).

As it happens, there are two versions, different dates, of a spreadsheet (an
.ods file) with the same name - in two separate folders, associated with one
backup drive or the other. I opened up the one with the older date (as it
happened) to address an earlier issue identified another OO user (jerky
scrolling in Mojave). I closed that file and tried to open up the other version
(with a newer date but same name, though different folder) - I get a message
that this file is locked by me blah blah blah - do I want read-only, copy,
cancel?

Never happened before. I tried quitting OO but that did not release the file; I
went back to the older-date version to see if there is something I can do to
release it. Nothing.

Maybe reboot?

Not a big deal in any sense but I am curious about what OO is doing since these
are two different files (different dates, different paths) - the only
similarity is the name.

Thanks.

Just FYI.

I only recently upgraded to Mojave (10.14.1) on a new machine and can confirm

It's fine on my other machine (with High Sierra, 10.13.6) - very smooth.

Also, never had issues with external devices.

Well, I downloaded 4.1.3 this morning, and aside from the usual Gatekeeper
issue, it opens and I am in business with my (much used) budget spreadsheet

So there is no real new issue with Gatekeeper in macOS unless you want the
option of allowing it to open anything from anywhere all the time (not
recommended). Then you will need to do the terminal thing described in the link
below.

My word, 4.1.3 opens quickly now. 4.1.2 was such a slug for some reason.

Any recommendations on computers because I am selling all my Apple iPhones, my
2 MacPros and various other Apple devices. Apple dumped 236 of my CD downloaded
songs in a transfer from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6s. They did this transfer at the
store with no backup. So it was Apples software that dumped the songs. Apple
can now be described as Sub Rosa Crooks.

Re: Open Office "Quits Unexpectedly" in Sierra

2016-10-07 Thread chuck ef
I admit that I am very confused here. I have gotten this sort of thing since I
first started using OO - I can't recall now which version of OS X that was -
about three years ago. But OO does sometimes quit on the first attempt and
always has in my experience. I have usually associated it with trying to open
it first thing after I boot-up. OO is one of the first things I open up after I
bring my machine up in the morning. Resources are tied up and perhaps the app
gives up the ghost too quickly.

I just try again and it opens. Though modestly annoying, it is by no means a
true problem. OO is quite functional even in macOS Sierra.

This is already reported on
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127143

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce it, and there is no solution nor
workaround other than trying to start OpenOffice inside Terminal.app
with a particular module so that you avoid the Start Center, for
example, to open the word processor:

/Applications/OpenOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/swriter

This might not help at all, other users reported further crashes or
painting glitches.

Re: Open office not working with macOS Sierra

2016-10-06 Thread chuck ef
Well, I have no idea what you are talking about. So far as I know, OO was never
compatible with iOS - but I am basing that only on previous correspondences. I
am just a user, not an Apache volunteer and I only use OO on my desktop.

And as I said before, my iMac uses macOS Sierra and OO is working just fine.
What you mean by "doesn't load" is not clear. If you are downloading a new
version, I hope that you are aware of Gatekeeper. But if you are trying to open
an existing OO version after upgrading to Sierra, I have no clue what your
problem is. Mine works fine.

Are you trying to open OO on a Mac? Or are you trying to open it on an iOS
device (iPad, iPhone)? That latter is nonexistent so far as I know. The former
is fine.

iOS mistake - it is Open Office that cannot be used. Open Office will not open
still in Sierra and from the comments on the internet others are experiencing a
similar problem. Open Office remains unusable and will be losing users unless
the problem is fixed.

I am using OO on macOS Sierra with no problems. It's open right now.

Now I periodically get the "quits unexpectedly" thing - in fact it happened
this morning. I just try again and it's fine. I think that is an old problem,
at least it has been happening to me since I first started using OO three years
ago or so.

Not sure what iOS has to do with it though.

I use the latest OO with the latest El Capitan (4.1.2 and 10.11.4 I think - I
am away from my desk) and it's just hunky dory.

You are running into Gatekeeper https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491

I think it is system preferences but like I said, not at my machine right now.
You just click on enabling Gatekeeper to allow you to open the disk image that
you downloaded.

Hope this helps - going from memory is always fraught with inanities.

Inserting 100 small text files into doc
Need to insert 100 plus small account record files into a single
document. Any simple easy way to do this?

That depends on whether your text files are plain text or word processor
text documents. If they are plain text, this may be a simple job for your
operating system. In Windows, for example,
 copy a+b c
creates a file c containing a concatenation of the contents of files a and
 b. You could write simple code to include multiple files if they were
 systematically named

If text files and on Linux, here's what I would try to do:
 1. Put them all in a new, or at least empty, folder, perhaps using my
 favourite file manager.
 2. Open a terminal in that folder.
 3. cat * NewFile
 Done.

NewFile will now contain all text from the hundreds of files in that
folder. Open it in Apache OpenOffice and do whatever you want with it.

 Kind regards

 Johnny Rosenberg
 ジョニー・ローゼンバーグ

In any case, you could use
 copy * z
to create a file z containing a concatenation of all the files whose names
 match *. So
 copy *.txt z.txt
would assemble all plain text files from the current folder.

It's then a trivial task to convert a plain text file into whatever you
 mean by doc or document.

 I trust this helps.

 Hello Susan,

From what you write, it sounds like you updated your Operating
System, not Open Office in itself. Is this correct?

In any case, updates/upgrades should not delete any contents
--unless of course you had to restore your data from some older
backup, which did not include all your current (pre-restore) HD contents.

Could you check your Applications folder and see if Open Office
is still there. If so, and if the reason you think it's no
longer there is that it doesn't fire up when you click on file
icons that used to be associated with OO, then you might have to
 reset your Open with... preferences.

If any of the above sounded a bit mysterious, could I suggest
that you get personal assistance. For this, you can make an
appointment at any Apple store, or contact your closest MUG
 (Macintosh Users Group).

RE: Mac OS Yosemite

2015-01-28 Thread chuck ef
Been working fine for me ... Although I have noticed that Calc in 4.1.1.
sometimes crashes on opening if I have too many things already open. But I
suspect that is because my machine is old - only 4 GB of RAM. So I open it
first thing and no problems.
I started with 4.1.0 sometime early last year (I think) when I was still on
Mavericks and lazily migrated over to 4.1.1 quite sometime after I upgraded to
Yosemite - seamlessly.
Cheers.

RE: Activation codes

2014-11-22 Thread chuck ef
I think, if I understand what you are referring to, that is an OS X thing that
you can't get around. I am on OS X too. It has nothing to do with Apache per
se, if I understand you. Apple simply requires users who download things from
non-approved sources to verify that they really want to do that.

 Greetings all,

I’ve been using AOO happily and gratefully for some years now and wish to ask
 my first question.

Apple advise me that an OS X update should be installed (OS X 10.9.4 to
10.9.5) and, in practice, this update is obligatory.

Will I be able to read the AOO files I have created to date when the OS X
 update is installed, please?

 I remain

 Yours sincerely, Paul Collins.

P.S. All my attempts to login to https://forum.openoffice.org/ have
failed, hence this direct email request for advice. Attempts to (re)

Re: Re: Calc issues, Mac OS X 10.9.4‏

2014-07-25 Thread chuck ef

Thanks to those who replied.

To Martin, I have written much software over the years that was indeed
confused. And while I am often confused, I have no soul - many people have
told me this so it must be true.
Anyway, as I mentioned in the previous email -
Cut-And-Paste issue: I had (prior to sending my email) opened the MS
spreadsheet from within OO and have been working with that. That was and is the
work around.
Column confusion when using Apple's Magic Mouse: Apparently this is a known
issue. I have been using the scroll bar at the bottom of the OO spreadsheet as
a usable work-around.

As for the suggestions -Cut-And-Paste Issue:1.) Insert From file worked.
Thanks.2.) Memory: default was 20MB, 5.2MB per object and 20 objects. Seems
like a lot. I don't think any given sheet in the file I was converting would
exceed those parameters. But I tried increasing the number of objects to 50 to
no effect (Note that I assumed that an object might be something like a text
box - but I found out that the select all I was using did not port the text
boxes over from a very simple sheet anyway - I had to do that manually unlike
Excel, where the select all will cause the text boxes to port over to a new
Excel sheet.)3.) I tried some simple sheets - they mostly were able to be
copied over but curiously, one with about 100 lines, four columns did not. The
only common thread between those that worked and didn't was that I had used
freeze window panes in those that didn't work. Getting rid of that freeze
though didn't help. 4.) A couple of users suggested more patience with the
paste, since a lot of conversion may be going on. Since there is no status
indicator other than a brief blip in the menu Edit indicating the paste
selection, I waited, and waited and waited - went on to other things. Nothing.
Not sure how long I should wait. Seems odd to me though that the conversion
that takes place when I open the Excel file from within OO (many sheets, not
just the one I was trying to paste) takes maybe 10 secs to complete. So I
suspect patience is NOT the issue.
Column confusion:It was suggested that I, in addition to the use of the scroll
bar that I had already discovered, enter the desired column number in the upper
left window. That did work. Good suggestion. So two work-arounds there until
the known issue is fixed.
So I guess the bottom-line is that there is something fishy and unknown in
cutting-and-pasting a single sheet from Excel to Calc.
__Original Email:I am an OO newbie so
bear with me.
I am on an iMac using 10.9.4 and I have never used OO before. I downloaded
4.1.0. I am trying to migrate an MS Excel spreadsheet to Calc. It will be nice
to get away from MS.
Anyway, I have noticed two problems right off the bat - maybe they are known
already and I simply need to be vectored to the appropriate Apache site. But in
the even that they are not known already
1.) I seem unable to cut-and-paste large amounts from my current MS Excel
file into OO Calc. I can do a small set of cells. When I do a 'select all' in
Excel and try to paste into Calc, however, nothing happens.
Work around: Open the Excel spreadsheet from within Calc. That is OK but not
particularly satisfying when I later have to paste more in from some other
source. But it is OK for now.
2.) I use a so-called Apple Magic Mouse. Excel often is jittery when I
accidentally slide a finger across the top of the mouse - columns zoom by but
it is recoverable, though irritating. However, Calc does not seem to be able to
recover so easily. It can get confused quickly (by a minor though quick finger
swipe across the mouse - speed of swipe seems to be the issue) and head off
into columns unknown. I try scrolling back with the mouse (sliding a finger
across the top of the mouse like a track pad) but it does not seem to be able
to get back to Column 'A'. It just seems lost (three-letter columns will come
down to two-letter columns but then go back to three-letter and so forth, sort
of drifting even though I am making a determined effort to scroll back to the
origin).
Work around: Use the Calc scroll bar at the bottom of the Calc spreadsheet.
Again, that is OK but not very satisfying. I was also able to recover by
reloading (from the Calc menu) but that would probably not be a good solution
for this apparent column tracking problem if it occurs before I have had a
chance to save my work - I have not tried that though.
Has anyone seen this before? Am I retracing old issues?

If you want to test whether OpenOffice 4.1.1 will fix this issue (as
Johnny wrote, this is what we expect: we consider the issue to be fixed
 for 4.1.1 as per https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124191 )
you can try a development snapshot: see
 http://www.openoffice.org/download/devbuilds.html

Please note: development snapshots are unofficial versions and are not
meant for end users, and we ask that they are used only for QA purposes.
I trust you are able to cope if something goes wrong. Otherwise, please
wait for OpenOffice 4.1.1 to be officially released next month.
