Hi, Gerard. It sounds as if you are receiving files of Open Document
Format (ODF) ISO standard types, like .odt, .ods, and so on. Is that
right? To use OpenOffice.org (OOo) to read and write these files:
1. Download the program from www.openoffice.org (careful, there are
sites with similar names that are not good sources). You'll want
to use a broadband connection, if possible -- the file is really
too large for slower connections. (If you do have to use such a
connection, a download manager is very highly recommended.
Otherwise, the website lists some suppliers who provide CDs for a
nominal cost, though OOo does not guarantee these sources.) By
default, the download will get the version appropriate to the
system doing the download. If you are using a library, a friend's
computer, or some different system than yours, you may need to
follow the link right below the primary one to see the table of
other systems, then find the version for your system. (All Windows
systems use the same file, though.)
2. Double-click on the downloaded file to unpack the installation
files, and follow the installation dialogs. (More detailed
instructions for installing are available on the website, if
necessary.) This will make the programs available to your
operating system (for instance, in your Windows Start menu under
All Programs, then the OpenOffice.org folder); you may also have
an icon on your desktop and/or your system tray to allow you to
start the OOo programs. You may want to keep the downloaded file
so you can reinstall if necessary without having to download again.
3. Set up the "file associations" needed to connect each filetype to
the appropriate program -- swriter.exe for .odt files, for
example. If the installation did not do this automatically, it can
generally be done by right-clicking on a file and choosing Open
With, browsing to the right program, and selecting the option to
always use this program for this type of file. You can use the
same technique to have OOo open files of other types, like those
for Microsoft Office. You may have to do this both from a file
manager, like Windows Explorer, and from within your mail client.
4. Double-clicking a file should now open it in OOo.
Welcome to OOo, and you can always come back here for questions. The
volunteers who follow this mailing list will be glad to help you. You
should stay with the list, rather than using our personal e-mails,
unless told otherwise in a response, and you should try to make the
subject line of your message descriptive to increase the probability of
finding somebody who can help. We also generally need to know things
like what operating system and version you're using, which version of
OOo, and what kind of file you have a question about.
