We wrote a large documentation with more than 200 pages,
which are separated in sub-documents and combined into a
master document. The master document and all it's sub-documents
were created as descripted in the Writer Guide:

The critical issue we have right now is, that OpenOffice
generates empty pages within the master document
but we do not know why. In the sub-documents there are
no manuell pages breaks defined. Export the master document
to a single documents solves the problem but that's not the
solution
