Just finished watching on one of my local PBS stations an episode of a
British TV series called Noah's Ark about a country vet and his
entourage.
According to the unofficial web site
(http://www.troth.demon.co.uk/pages/noahsark.html) the show aired in the
UK from December '97 to November '98. I

I was disappointed to observe that the script writers used
pints and gallons to refer to water volumes.
Do our UK correspondents have any plausible explanations to offer?
The pint is still the only legal measure for *draught* beer. It is a fairly

Terry:
Thanks for your reply.
Alas, the characters who used the words pint and gallon were both
under 30
years old (not the old country vet!). Seems like the script writers
would be
taking that into account when they put words in those characters'
mouths!

To all,
I just sent this to the letters editor of the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Atlanta 10 kilometer race held on July
4th each year is constantly referred to as a 6.2 mile race. I hope that
will give me an opening into talking about metric. I carefully counted my
words at 150, so
I doubt very much whether metricsucks is really anti-metric. My impression is
that it pokes fun at the opponents of metrication.

Just to clarify: the UKMA mailing list is intended for UKMA members only,
rather than being a general discussion list (which the old list was). This is
partly a security measure, as we discuss tactics,

Apologies. I had forgotten about that. Perhaps I can now say 'you should
join the UKMA and get the UK mailing list'.

I can not find on my computer. However, Marcus appears to want to
replace the second with a more decimal umit. That would involve
changing most of the units in physics. Unfortunately Marcus was not

There are no collective laws on sizing at the European level. Such laws are
