At 18,000 feet (varies in some areas) aircraft change their altimeters from
whatever was at the nearest ground station to the standard setting of
1013.2. This way everyone at higher altitude is using the same standard
and, assuming they are properly calibrated, all altimeters

It is particularly annoying to hear the NBC announcers give the result of a
long jump, high jump, shotput or javelin toss in FFU when, right behind, is
an electronic sign with the result in meters. Why are these sports
different from the others? NBC has no trouble with swimming or running.
Also, most speed limit signs are in black and white only. Keeping the same
two colors saves money.
