John: I used to work as a line mechanic and did unit engine repair back in the late 70's. Since I worked for a "foreign" car shop, everything was metric (and we liked it that way). The older mechanics were also comfortable with SAE bolts and wrenches, etc. but I worked only on foreign cars (mostly VWs), so that wasn't an issue for me.
