This is correct Martin. Although, having just returned from a visit to Canada,
the US gallon now seems to be the de facto gallon there.

Interestingly, on this last visit, when I ordered a glass of wine in a
restaurant, the waiter asked whether I wanted the ‘6 ounce’ or the ‘9 ounce’
size. Now I truly had no idea how big these glasses were. The colleague I was
dining with converted these to mL – but even he then mused as to whether the
‘ounces’ were imperial or US Customary (the waiter didn’t know).

Considering that wine comes in 750 mL bottles, it seems bizarre to convert this
to ‘ounces’, of whatever ilk.

As far as I am aware, the Canadians used to use Imperial gallons, not US
gallons. Although US and Imperial fluid ounces differ by 4%, the respective
gallons differ by about 30% due to there being 16 US floz in in a US pint, but
20 imperial floz in an imperial pint. Another good reason to adopt a
world-wide standard.

I wonder what instructions they use in Canada?

I would have said 12 and 20 mL/L, but close enough.

So many times I get teed off because of the stupid non-metric mixing
instructions for Roundup herbicide. I thought readers might be interested.

Dear Eula,
Thanks for your email. But you sent me a canned response, except for the "Mr.
Wyeth" part. I am not stupid, and I know all about the metric system. My
email was to try to force someone in authority to even think about why Monsanto
does not list metric mixing instructions on its Roundup concentrate jug. It
would be so easy to do!

Actually, the mix for Roundup concentrate is about 1%, or 10 mL per L, and
double that for extra strength. What could be simpler? Why do I have to get
out the calculator to obtain this answer? Why can't Monsanto just say so on
the label? It is beyond me how opaque the marketing people are at this company.

Couldn't you forward this to someone in authority to at least get them to think
about this?

Thank you for contacting us and for the opportunity to help you with your
weed control solutions.

I am very sorry that you feel that the label of Roundup Weed & Grass Killer
Super Concentrate is misleading, Mr. Wyeth. Please note that there are two
dilution rates listed on the label; 1.5 ounces per gallon, and 2.5 ounces per
gallon. If you are trying to control hardy, perennial weeds, use the higher 2.5
ounce per gallon dilution rate. Easy-to-control, annual weeds can be
effectively controlled at the lower 1.5 ounce per gallon dilution rate.

The following will show you approximately how much coverage you can expect
from your container of Weed & Grass Killer Super Concentrate:

       Quart
       Gallon

        1.5 ounces per gallon
       6,300 square feet
       26,000 square feet

        2.5 ounces per gallon
       3,900 square feet
       15,360 square feet

Mr. Wyeth, there are 1,000 milliliters in 1 liter.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in our
products. Please feel free to contact our company anytime we may be of
assistance.
