I have a friend who forgot the root passowrd to his box. Understanding that he'll have to reinstall his whole box but not wanting to lose some data on the drive. He has LVM setup for /homes and /srv I can still read the fstab file, and can see /dev/DataVol1/srv is where the /srv partition is

You can trivially reset the root password to the box if you have physical access to it. The easiest way is to boot into single user mode--are you using grub or LILO? With LILO you just type linux single at the prompt, and with grub you simply add single to the end of the kernel line.
