I have heard of some doing a test by drilling a small hole where the
tire would most closely meet the shaft, sticking a safety pin or
paperclip through , and measuring the free play. You can put a dab
of silicone on the hole when you are done. There is said to be quite
a difference in the

The stock swingarm and rim will hold most 170s. I am working on bracing and notching my swingarm, actually bending the tubing tonight. Most wider V-max rims typically 17x5.5 or 17x6.0 have approximately 10mm offset to the right for shaft drive bikes. Paul, 85 V-max, VMOA 1141.
Could
you tell me what you mean by "notching"? I plan to brace and widen the
swingarm on my 98 Vmax. Also, can you refer me to a shop who can do
both? Glenn, Los Angeles, Ca.

Glenn,
If you
look on the left side of you swing arm, (driveshaft side) you'll see there

Just for the record, the stock V-max tire is 6 inches (150mm) not 7 inches (175mm) Some 170 series tires will fit in the stock swingarm with no modifications, some require the spacer swap. A 8 inch tire is 200mm and will not fit regardless. Damn metric system. Later, Paul 85 V-max, VMOA 1141.
Mike,
I noticed Thomas Powell has nice photos of PCW's arm ... on his photo
site, (look under "tires").

The holeshot arm is similar in appearance but is braced only ... no
widening ... at http://www.holeshot.com
There are more exotic arms at Mek,

DOH
yeah, i think the manfacturers all put that 'extra material' on the side of
tires to pad the price, and make the tire 'look' wider. Thats whats important
isn't Don, especially for Vmaxers who only use the center inch of the tire
only.

Blair, you can take a tire file and shave the edge for clearance, it
won't affect the tire.

BLAIR,
IF YOUR PROBLEM IS INDEED "SLIGHT" then i might be able to
help. take a very close look at the brake side of the swingarm. you may know
from changing your tire that there is a washer on the outside of the brake
braket and inside of the swingarm.

Scott, PCW does not make a braced swing arm with a kerker header
system.I could tell you storiesand its not a good one

It's easiest to pull the axle out of the shaft housing and then try to engage
it by hand, once it's in it's much easier to attach the shaft back.

Eric, the u-joint will drop just enough to make it tricky to get back
in. Have you taken the shocks off? It will help in getting it back in
place.

One other thing, is put the bike in gear when puting the shaft back in.
First time I removed it, had it all back together and no go, it had
slipped above it. It also keeps the shaft from turning while lining it
up.
