My '85 also has a slight tappet noise that comes and goes. I check the
valves every spring and except for one valve needing a shim change at about
10,000 miles they haven't changed at all in the following 60,000 miles. This
motor has a very stable valve train. Get an opinion from some familiar
My suggestion, if the tapping noise bothers you, is to get a loud exhaust
system. This usually covers most clattering, pinging, and clanking :)
Seriously, I doubt it's a real engine problem, but a good set of slip-ons or
a full exhaust system header will cover most of the engine noises
I've noticed that my 98 has noisy valve-train like tapping/ticking noises
once its gotten hot (up to the "dot"). I went with Cory's idea and
increased the exhaust noise. Shazam, no more ticking noise.
