My '85 also has a slight tappet noise that comes and goes. I check the valves every spring and except for one valve needing a shim change at about 10,000 miles they haven't changed at all in the following 60,000 miles. This motor has a very stable valve train. Get an opinion from some familiar

My suggestion, if the tapping noise bothers you, is to get a loud exhaust system. This usually covers most clattering, pinging, and clanking :) Seriously, I doubt it's a real engine problem, but a good set of slip-ons or a full exhaust system header will cover most of the engine noises
