Hi, I need to install Virtualbox on a system where Windows Installer is totally borked.
I cannot install any software that is delivered as a .MSI. It seems to me that previous versions of VirtualBox didn't use Windows Installer but the latest does (despite being delivered as an .EXE). Downloading and re-installing all versions of Microsoft Installer does NOT help. I even installed v4.5 redistributable that solved the issue in another system, but it just doesn't help here. Software that uses Nullsoft's NSI installer DOES work, as well as those that use INNOSETUP.... it's just the installers that use MSI that fail.... Just thinking aloud: some questions: #1 Why not use Nullsoft's NSIS for the windows version? It would warrant a correct installation even on systems where MSI is damaged.... Did I mention that NSIS is free? NSIS: another gem from Nullsoft http://swortham.blogspot.com/2008/02/nsis-another-gem-from-nullsoft.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nullsoft_Scriptable_Install_System If you think Windows Installer f*ckups are rare, think again: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=mozclient&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=windows+installer+damaged #2 Could it be possible for Virtualbox.org to also distribute a .zip version of the win32 build, going forward? #3 Failing #1 and #2, is anyone kind enough to zip up the latest Virtualbox from the win32 install dir and upload it to some of the temporary file hosting services like megaupload.com or rapidshare.com? -Thanks...
