Can you separate the circuit board traces and just cut away the power
button section of the circuit board? I think that would be the easiest
way, if possible. If not, and especially if it interacts with anything
other than firmware, I would estimate you have a LOT of work ahead of you.
It was an old PowerBook something-or-other. I think it was a PowerBook
540c, but I'm not sure exactly.

Look in the Control Panels, Energy Saver or which ever one controls
the sleep timing and see if there is an option to have it power up

connect a pushbutton between pin 2 and pin 4 (gnd) if i recall it
