On the iPad, double tap hide keyboard, however this is only on iPad.

Sometimes I want to get rid of the on-screen keyboard in order to get it
out of the way to look at parts of the screen that it obscures, but I
have not been able to figur a way to do this without scrubbing to go
back, which leaves the screen I'm working in and then going back to that
ah, forgot to mention that this is an iPhone 5S. I do have a hardware
keyboard but don't always have it with me.
