Oh yea, now I remember:
If you are running VMS earlier than 7.2 (with its ODSx enhancements), it's
very easy to write a script that deletes (whatever you like) out of a
directory ass-backwards, something like the following:
# cleandir - go through directory backasswards and get rid of

I'd agree that most of what you want is nearly in Perl now.
Missing "native" calls can be implemented via xs, as has been so nicely done
already by Dan, especially.
Logical names need some work, but they do work, not as nicely as in VMS, but
they are usable. I think to get the best
You know, I'm starting to get those funny sensations in my stomache, like
what I get when I mistype a case on a *nix-based ftp server.
Yup, VMS after 7.2 is gonna have more and more nix-like case sensitivies.

implemented with a large shareable image (perlshr.exe), so it should be "a
piece cake" as the russians used to say...
Keep us posted on your progress, this sounds really like the right stuff...

Sebastian, I don't agree on this one.
I think the internal data format should be the one predominantly used on the
platform. The fact that some database might use a different format can
easily be handled in the glue in xs, or whatever. I've never used pack
myself, so I'm not up on what the
