I would like to express my opinion about NetBEUI.
My company is using some simple printers connected to our network
through printer servers (one is NetGear something, the other is D-Link
DP-300). These printer servers are invisible to other computers within the
domain. Official

Ok, I was just trying to help someone, here. I'm speaking from experience and it
appears that others have the same experience. Take it or leave it, but let's not
argue over it.

Microsoft is dropping NetBEUI because it is a non-routable,
non-scalable hack.
Oh by the way, what does routable mean ? What does that imply ?

I would have to say that the reality is that VNC uses TCP/IP. Netbios is
used to assist in name resolution and to assist in other network
functionality over TCP/IP.
So that said Netbeui is not nor ever has been related with tcp/ip.
Now why does Steve say that this works. That is because over

Hello all!
I've been running WinVNC 3.3.3R9 successfully for some 9 months or more
where the server is installed on a Win2k and I view from my WinXP.
I installed 3.3.7 today, and although it ran successfully for about 10
minutes, it stopped working after I rebooted the Win2k (on which the

Thanks to reply from the network experts. My company's network has
less than 40 computers and we're using ethernet switches. I suppose
switches are different from routers in that NetBEUI should work in switches,
right?
There's also an ethernet hub. Is it a switch or a hub?
Hi All!
Recently changed our subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0 and
since then have not been able to attach to workstations running VNC
server. IP's and subnet are derived via DHCP. Able to connect via local
LAN but not over Internet via VPN.
Any thoughts???
Cheers,

I installed RH 7.3 and set up VNC server on a remote machine.
I use SSH + VNC from my RH 8.0 desktop and all I get is a thatched
grey screen with the x cursor. My /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file looks
like this: VNCSERVER=1:my_username
I did some checking and I find many .x files in the root

A new question:
How are these files created??
If root has it and I do not, then what can I do to get them.. Copy the
files over into my .vnc directory..
I copied the xstartup file into my .vnc and I still get the grey
thatch..
I have tried different version of the xstartup using just the default

These are generally created by the vncserver script. Have you ran this
manually as the user you are trying to get to work?

I got it to work..
I was wondering.. I can only get in when the machine in remote machine
is logged in as my self..
Is there a way to get in with the screen locked or logged out?
Maybe, maybe not, but it is worth the ask..
I do not trust the M$ heads @ cityhall... 8-)

Sorry if there was some confusion.. I must be logged in to the console
in order for my remote machine to get a desktop..
I will include the details of my configuration or misconfiguration
