Mike: Is there a reason you want to do things the HARD way? A router is inexpensive and easy to set up. Plus it offers better security than a software firewall. If you absolutely refuse to buy a router, you're going to have to get some help with the internet connection sharing and tweaking the XP

You need static IP addresses and take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308127/EN-US/ This is your main problem and what makes life harder for you: I AM NOT INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A ROUTER!! - they're $30 these days. You should also consider utilising a properly configured VPN.
