Re-reading the problem as you've described it, it sounds like the microscope
software is probably using relative pointer motion during these drag events,
while VNC Free Edition will be sending absolute pointer events so will not
give the desired results.

No, it's just the standard Windows Messenger that comes bundled with XP.
The version I use is 4.7.
