My Wife Is a Household Pickpocket

MAKKAH, 24 May 2006 - Abu Majed says that his wife is a smart thief. He discovered that over the years she had been building a nest egg in a separate bank account, occasionally transferring money from the family account into hers through the Internet.

"She was transferring small amounts to her account every once in a while," said Abu Majed. "After years of theft, she managed to collect a considerable amount of money. When I confronted her and asked her why, she simply said that she was afraid of an uncertain future. She said that I would leave her some day because all men are traitors. If husbands like me are traitors then that would make her a snake."

With so many unemployed women in the country - some estimates put the jobless rate among Saudi women at 95 percent - it's no surprise that some husbands are finding their wives behaving like household pickpockets.

In a report published in Al-Nadwah daily, men like Abu Majed describe their wives' habits of stealing money from the breadwinner of the family.

Mazin, a husband who did not want to provide his family name, uses the word "disease" to describe his wife's habit of stealing money from him. "I gave her all that she asked for," said Mazin. "When these thefts happened, I initially suspected the maid. Time proved that my suspicions were unfounded."

In order to confirm his suspicion, Mazin installed secret surveillance cameras in his bedroom and home office. He said he was shocked at seeing his wife on the video entering a room and taking money. When confronted with the video, he said his wife first laughed and then broke into tears.

"She's the mother of my children and my partner. She is entitled to whatever she wants from me. She apologized and I had to forgive her. I told myself that she was the mother of my children. Her claim was that I was not giving her enough of an allowance," said Mazin.

Abu Talal, who also wanted to withhold his family name, told the newspaper that his wife feels entitled to steal money from him. He has resorted to stashing away money and sleeping with his wallet under his pillow. Like Mazin, Abu Talal claims that he gives his wife what she wants when she asks.

"My wife tells me to my face that she will continue taking money whenever she feels like it. What make me sad is that I'm not a stingy man. I give her what she wants," he said.

He said that one time his wife took money that didn't belong to him and spent it at the mall. He had to borrow money to pay back his friend who had entrusted him with the cash. He said that he had to forgive her because she is the mother of his eight children.

Abdullah Al-Manna, a mosque imam, said if the husband is stingy and not covering family expenses, then the wife has the right to take money from him to pay for household expenses. But, he added, stealing isn't the way.

"The wife has no right to take money from her husband without notifying him first," said Al-Manna. "She is entrusted with her husband, children and house and she should never treat him like this."
