Hi, Robinson Tryon wrote on 2013-02-15 20:09: I do apologize for gumming-up the wiki with these oversized image files. They really don't belong on the wiki. Perhaps Camille and I can no problem. The thing indeed is, we don't have any handy alternative at the moment. But maybe that will change soon. ;) work with you to find a replacement tool for storing all of our source media! Or rather, perhaps we can take the lead on that task and coordinate with you -- I don't want to take more of your time than necessary. :) I'm still busy with the server migration, and the next server is already waiting, so I don't have many cycles left for other tasks at the moment. If someone else than me could take the lead, that'd be wonderful. As a quick fix, I'd suggest moving it up to 10MB. Even though the wiki is serving as our defacto repository for source media for design team stuff, I think it's reasonable to have reservations about throwing anything larger up than 10MB without having a really good reason, first :-) I've set it to 10 MB now, let's see if it helps. I'm puzzled myself! A 3.8MB file and a ~ 6MB file worked. But a couple of 4.1MB files and a ~7MB file did not, so it's not like I'm seeing a direct correlation with file size. Maybe there's something about the complexity of the encoding...bit depth...something that makes the internal processing stop. That's really strange. I've switched from ImageMagick to the internal processing for a test, but it didn't work either. Put it to my todo list. Re: [libreoffice-website] Some of more feedback for the new main homepage
Hi Camille, Robinson, all, #1 Add outline: none; and some :hover/:active effect to the CSS of the ‹ and › buttons – the first one to remove the ugly whole-page outline around the right button, e.g. in Firefox; the second to overcome the accessibility/visibility bug we just created. This should be fixed by now ; see : http://vm13.documentfoundation.org/40test/deliv_20130213/ Ah, good. And without creating usability problems #2 Make the page sliding animation faster – slow animations draw attention to themselves, fast ones help the user navigate. I think the animation is still in the first group. Which settings would you recommend? Hm, my knowledge of JS debug tools is rather cursory ... so I couldn't try it in-browser, but maybe somewhere between 400 and 600ms would be better than a whole second..? While I visited the page again, I noticed two more things btw: * clicking Discover it breaks the back button in Firefox (big no) * the slides carousel never stops – which is slightly annoying, it would seem better to me if it stopped after getting back to the first slide (just personal opinion) #3 Use a non-condensed font, e.g. regular Open Sans. The current font is pretty hard to read, especially on the Discover it page. That would impact significantly the layout. I'll have a more precise look into it. Not sure, but since some slides's text cuts into the download button on smaller screens even now, maybe you'll have to adjust font size either way. Do you have a rough estimate of proportion / types of config where it's ugly ? Looks rather ok on all the ones I checked (including Windows machines) Haven't checked on Windows machines, I am personally using OpenSuse with freetype-infinality and hinting setting none... I've attached part of a screenshot, hope the list lets this through. If you can see it, you'll notice the RE and the C, as well as the OW seem to jump around quite a bit. Hi, Tom Thank you for your extensive explanation. Your comments on the Getting Started Guide are very helpful. Our team has never completed the help localization, even in earlier years (OOO) when we had a much bigger team. I doubt that we will ever catch up. 437219 words are a lot of words! I have had another look at the Documentation page of the Wiki and the ODFAuthors page. It is not clear to me whether these relate only to the English documentation, or whether they include the localization of those documents. Localization seems to be not covered. You know those items in the help that look like this? bookmark_valueformatting styles; styles and templates/bookmark_value bookmark_valuestyles; styles and templates/bookmark_value bookmark_valueorganizing; templates (guide)/bookmark_value bookmark_valuetemplates; organizing (guide)/bookmark_value I guess that they are used to construct the help index. Is there any documentation on this? We seem to have to guess how the users might enter index terms. If, instead, we could have a full word search, like Google does, we would not need these bookmark_value elements, and that would save us a heap of time! And due to the history of bad requirements provided by the community, it will take long time to create it the way people would like it :-) The less we need to develop in-house, the better. What is easy is to have silverstripe provide a list of links for files in a folder hierarchy. But there is nothing that would enforce a hierarchy for a given file, let's say you download and edit file foo from category writer, then I'd expect it to go back to category writer - but doing that is all up to the user who does upload the files. I agree: That setup might put too much responsibility on the user. If there's no 'sync my files' button or 'git commit -a', then it's going to be hard for us to keep our repository tidy and organized. For example I don't know what the problem with alfresco was. Only reason I remember reading here was that people were more familiar with the other platform for odfauthors. I haven't used silverstripe or alfresco. If someone wants to give me some credentials to an existing install (user: qubit), I'd be happy to poke around and learn more about their interaction and workflows. Also I don't really know who will be using the file-storage, and I really lack a list of stuff that the file-storage should (would be nice-to-have) and must (absolute requirement) be able to do. Here's my first draft: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Qubit/Repository_for_non-code_assets#Feature_comparisons Please feel free to make comments or update notes on that page. I'd especially like someone familiar with Silverstripe to fill in information. After assembling that monster table, I found it interesting how well MediaWiki stacked up. MediaWiki provides a solid list of our desired features, and provides the best support for metadata and license management of any of the tools I've tested. The biggest feature that it's missing is tools for batch management (import, download, etc..). Cheers, --R Well, as a bonus, if we went with Alfresco, we could also do a bit of CMIS along with it. :-) And, as a bonus, maybe Alfresco devs would be able to help? Alfresco sounds like a good candidate. I think the next step in considering it for this purpose is understanding why we moved away from it for our localization and documentation work. If there are limitations to the platform, best to identify them up front :-) -- Robinson 'qubit' Tryon -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to website+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
