Direct contact is most effective, so call a legislator's office to speak with him or her or to set up an appointment. Know your stuff: Be informed about a topic and be specific but polite. Go local: Legislators listen most closely to their own constituents, and it's easier to get an appointment with your own legislators. Testifying: Call the committee's legislative assistant to get on the agenda; chances are best if you call early. To visit: To take a Capitol tour, call 651-296-2881. You also can watch a floor session from the galleries; call the House and Senate information offices for session schedules. WHAT ABOUT PARKING AND DIRECTIONS? There are ramps, metered lots and on-street metered parking in the Capitol area. For information, call 651-296-2881 and select the parking option, or check the legislative website; click on "general information" and then "frequently asked questions" and the "visiting the Capitol" option. The same phone number and website address also provide additional information, including directions to the Capitol and food services. For information on sign language interpreting services, call CSD Interpreting Services (651-224-6548). ©2006 Star Tribune.
