Well, this depends on your Desktop Environment. I don't know how to do
this for MATE. However, there might be configuration options for the
MATE window manager (marco, I guess).

It mentions "dconf-editor" which might also help in configuring the
current window manager instead of replacing it.

After using the kwin --replace, the borders go away.

Any idea where I can configure the window manager to use?  I don't see an
option in the x2go client.  Or is this configured locally with a MATE
setting?

This looks like you are using a compositing window manager. Does it
look ok if you run openbox --replace or kwin --replace inside the
session?
