[Xastir] setting up maps in xaster for newbies

Hello all: New to list and new to this computer. I'm running Mint 11 now and would like to use Xastir in both internet connected and non-internet connected mode. I used Xastir on my netbook and loaded up maps I downloaded from the internet (Tiger something?). The problem was that even

My Xastir is connected to the Internet here, no radios. Is it possible to add a path to the DEFAULT PATH to include the local Igate/digi? I run an APRS check-in net and would like to send out a QST prior to the net, but my local Igate doesn't respond to it, only to calls directed at local
