The resulting pdf allows for search as well as copy paste for devanagri

The pdf is rendered using the original image, but the OCRed text is

I am hoping that once the XeTeXgenerateactualtext feature is implemented,
it would lead to more pdf apps supporting actualtext.

SumatraPDF on windows 10 was similar to Foxit Reader - using the glyph
stream instead of the actualtext - in case of devanagari text.

Hi,
Can anyone confirm that \XeTeXgenerateactualtext is included in texlive
2016?
I installed texlive 2016 yesterday on ubuntu 14.04 and would like to use it
with sanskrit documents in devanagari.
I would also like to know which pdf viewers support actualtext for complex
scripts.

Hi,
I am using commands similar to the following for processing the sanskrit

You may need to use a footnotefont that supports devanagari.
Or try using ucharclasses to automatically switch fonts based on unicode
blocks.

Very few fonts have support for the vedic accents (combining marks and
characters from Devanagari, DevanagariExtended and VedicExtensions unicode
blocks).
I am trying to use the combining marks and characters from Devanagari,
DevanagariExtended and VedicExtensions unicode blocks with text in
/National_Library_at_Kolkata_romanisation to
allow for it to be used for other Indian languages also.

As suggested earlier by Zdenek Wagner, use \XeTeXgenerateactualtext in
the preamble of your latex document. Then the Devanagari text can also be
easily copied from the generated pdf. We use this option in pdfs posted on
sanskritdocuments.org and it works very well.
ShreeDevi
Correct syntax is
\XeTeXgenerateactualtext=1
