I installed XFree86 4.1.0 on my RedHat 7.1, and now the
startup is all messed up. I end up with only XFree
running when I used to have a KDE login.

If I type 'startkde' at the console I get (I think it's xterm),
KDE starts, but everything has a greenish titlebar above
it, and I only have a few fonts available.

During the install-script, I answered 'yes' to all questions
about overwriting configuration-files (as I never modified
them).

Am I right thinking that I lost the Red Hat specific
config-files? (I backed up the X11R6 directory, but NOT
the X11 one)

If so, which config files have to be changed back? Should
I change them to the default RedHat 7.1 ones? (RH7.1
carries XFree4.0.3)

I would find this out myself, but the startup is really
confusing (startx, xinit, xinitrc, xinput, xclients, ...)

Oh, and maybe it also has something to do with the
display-manager and/or the session-manager? I really
don't know what these two programs do, but I get the
xsm when I startup my computer. (I found there's also a
kdm, a gdm and a xdm; also very confusing...)

As you can see, I'm really lost here and I can imagine
this could happen to many newbies that use RH and
want to upgrade XFree.
