Sorry I forgot to mention I'm on Mac OSX. Using an iBook.
I'm having a go at installing version 4.3 now, the version of XFree86 I had sort of appeard when I installed OpenOffice, so I suspect it made a mess of it, seeing as that didn't work either. I'll let you know what happens.
