Doing:

Option "NoRenderAccel" "on"

does keep the machine from crashing.  Here are the versions of the
relevant software:

xfree86 4.2.1
libc6 2.2.5
libxft2 2.1
fontconfig 2.1
freetype 2.1.3
nautilus 2.2.0.2
kernel 2.4.20

Gnome2.2 uses libxft2 extensively.  To reproduce the crash, open a
nautilus window in icon view with lots of stuff in it (>300), grab the
scrollbar, and shake back and forth over and over again.  It may take a
few seconds.
