SiliconMotion Rotation

2003-08-18 Thread Chris Edgington
The siliconmotion driver has its own internal rotation option. It appears
that this works by enabling ShadowFB, then using the hardware rotation
capabilities to rotate-blt the changed areas. This worked fine with XF
4.2.0. However, with the same hardware, this is broken with XF 4.3.0. I
diffed the smi_driver.c code between those versions and nothing seems to
have been changed in the driver code that would have affected rotation.

One thing that is not clear to me is how the X system in general is
notified of the rotated resolution. In the driver, when rotation is
enabled, the only apparent swapping of width and height that goes to
anything outside of the driver is the initialization of the framebuffer
layer's ScreenInit. Is this enough to communicate the rotated resolution?

Running XF 4.2, if I start the server, then run xwininfo, click on the
desktop, it reports back a window size of 600x800, which is what I would
expect. If I then switch to XF 4.3, start the server, run xwininfo, click on
the desktop, it reports a window size of 800x600. So, did something change
about the higher level stuff that now requires something else to be done to
change the desktop size?

Thanks,
-Chris

I have heard that the addition of the RandR (Rotate and Resize)
extension into 4.3 broke some drivers which already did rotation.

If I heard correctly, one of the features of RandR is that it allows
this sort of notification.

Unfortunately this area suffered in the political fight which happened
around the time of the 4.3 release.

Hi

I have been receiving emails saying that I'm contributing to the moral decay of
society by
selling the Banned CD. That may be, but I feel strongly that you have a right to
benefit from
this hard-to-find information.

So I am giving you one last chance to order the Banned CD!

With this powerful CD, you will be able to investigate your friends,
enemies and lovers in just minutes using the Internet. You can track down old flames
from college,
or you can dig up some dirt on your boss to make sure you get that next promotion!

Or maybe you want a fake diploma to hang on your bedroom wall.
You'll find addresses for companies that make these diplomas on the Bannedd CD.

Need to disappear fast and never look back? No problem!
Using the Banned CD, you will learn how to build a completely
new identity.

Obviously, the Powers That Be don't want you to have the Banned CD.
They have threatened me with lawsuits, fines, and even imprisonment unless I stop
selling it immediately.
But I feel that YOU have a Constitutional right to access this type of information,
and I can't be intimidated.

Uncle Sam and your creditorss are horrified that I am still selling this product!
There must be a price on my head!

Why are they so upset? Because this CD gives you freedom.
And you can't buy freedom at your local Walmart. You will
have the freedom to avoid creditorss, judgments, lawsuits, IRS
tax collectors, criminal indictments, your greedy ex-wife or
ex-husband, and MUCH more!

Subject: [XFree86] Japanese fonts

Hi, I'm trying to get Japanese fonts working without the X Font Server.
The
seem to work fine with the font server, but I need to get it working
without
going through the font server. This is the section I am concerned with:

 Section Files
 RgbPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb
 # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
 # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of
 # the X server to render fonts.
 # xfs FontPath unix/:-1
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
 FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mdk:unscaled
 FontPath /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1
 EndSection

This was done previously to get the fonts working without the font server.
They seem to include everything in the fonts directory, and I know
Japanese
fonts are installed somewhere because I had them working with the font
server. I mean not working as in getting blocks or getting UTF-8 garble.
 Any suggestions?

[XFree86] Mouse warp feature/bug.

2003-08-18 Thread Mike Mestnik
When I use xinerama where one screen is smaller(in pixels), moving the mouse
horizontally will
cause it to warp vertically when moved off the screen. When the same is done
vertically, however,
the mouse stops and there is no warping. I'd like the vertically behavior to be the
default when
moving off the screen and for there to be no warping.

Now... some more questions.. (I'm a bit confused, XFree and its config

What if I don't create a [Section Modes] and I just add the ModeLine I
need to use directly to the [Section Monitor]?

And what does it mean what you wrote above? I mean: using two
screens?!? Would it be like having 2 different set-ups and I could
select the one I need in relation to _which_ monitor I actually
connected to the PC? Is there a way to switch between them as it's
possible to switch between different sizes (like 800x600, 1024x768,
etc.) without having to restart X or reboot?

Thank you...

BTW: as I don't know the hoizontal and vertical frequency ranges, what
should I put in HorizSync and VertRefresh for my Monstrum?

RE: [XFree86] (no subject) S3 prosavage DDR driver

2003-08-18 Thread marcelmourguiart
Hi ( i?m spanish native so excuse my english )

Well i have the same problem with Suse 8.2 and the reason is in the driver
for the video S3 prosavage DDR, I now two solutions:
1. Fast:
Download the driver from: http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html and
a) make a backup copy of the existing savage driver in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/

b) unpack the archive and copy the driver (savage_drv.o) to
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/

c) run sax2 to configure XFree ( you must download the driver for your
Xfree version )
d) sometime you must open /etc/X11/XF86Config
find the Device section and add the following line
Option UseBIOS no
With this solution you don?t have 3D acceleration

2. Best: I now for sure that there is better patch for Red hat 7.2, you
can find it in the same web of the other driver (
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html)
it?s only work with xfree 4.2.0 but some people say it?s work perfect.
With this solution you will have 3D ACELLERATION

So that?s all i hope this could help you.

atte.

Good day.
I've a trouble with compiling a some programm for Qt 3.x under Sun Solaris 2.5.1:

When I copied libX11.so from Solaris 8 - linked created binary, but I can't run it,
because this XInternAtom isn't present in another library, where ls looking for it.
How can I resolve this trouble, w/o coping .so file to Solaris 2.5?..

Solaris 2.5.1 is a very old release - it only had X11R5, while
almost everything these days assumes X11R6 or newer. If you must
run under Solaris 2.5.1, your best bet is compiling a complete
set of X11 libraries and installing them in /usr/X11R6 - then using
those only for apps that require them and leaving the /usr/openwin
libraries for the apps already present in Solaris.

RE: [XFree86] ATI R200 Radeon 8500

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
all PCI values below are taken from http://yourvote.com/pci database.

 /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

 XFree86 Version 4.3.0
(II) PCI: PCI scan (all values are in hex)
 (II) PCI: 00:00:0: chip 1002,cab2 card , rev 02 class 06,00,00
 hdr 00

ATI IGP 340M host bridge

 (II) PCI: 00:01:0: chip 1002,7010 card , rev 00 class 06,04,00
 hdr 01

ATI RS200 PCI to AGP bridge

 (II) PCI: 01:05:0: chip 1002,4337 card 0e11,0056 rev 00 class 03,00,00
 hdr 00

ATI RS200M Mobility M6 (U2) laptop typcial chipset

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:05:0
 (**) ChipID override: 0x514C
(**) Chipset ATI Radeon 8500 QL (AGP) found

Boy, you are using overrides - telling the driver
that it should see something it knows which is not
present at all in your system. You will better take
one of the latest snapshots from XF86 or the DRI people
and retry than trying things that will surely crash.

(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to set up write-combining range
 (0x800,0x200)

I think your CPU is our of MTRR resources our your
Linux kernel does have some coding flaw for MTRR.

(EE) RADEON(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...

The engine got some bogus data, possibly from AGP range.
Alternatively the programmed and/or checked bits do not
at all match what the driver wants them to be.

Use latest drivers. the RS200 was not supported in
the last XF86 release since those chipset is newer
or at least Linux coding for that was not there at
this time.

 /etc/X11/XF86CONFIG:

its XF86Config or rather XF86Config-4.

 Section Device
 Identifier VESA Framebuffer
 Driver radeon
 ChipID0x514c
 VideoRam32768
 #Option AGPMode 4
MemBase 0x800 # physical address of the linear framebuffer
#IOBase 0xf030 # physical address of the MMIO registers
 BusID PCI:1:05:0
 EndSection

Forget about all those overrides, those were merely for ISA boards
which did not expose full autoconfiguration and autodetection.
PCI/AGP boards do nicely autodetect if they are supported.
The sole purpose of the ChipID override for PCI boards is
the fact that some newer chipset IDs are mostly compatible
with former designs. You already failed that with the stock
drivers. Use beta drivers.

Alan, thanks for your answer, but your solution disagree for my situation: I must use
Solaris 2.5.1 and pre-installed XWin and nothing more.

I've downloaded Qt 1.x and see that it's use XInternAtom too.

So, may be libX11.so incomplete?..

would you mind,
if am redirecting you to the Rage3D forums.
there you will find several threads and
step by step instructions to bring nForce to life.
of course they do a bit more concentrate on ATI,
but that location should solve your problem anyways.

You should upgrade to XFree86 4.3. Your version (4.0.3) is a couple
years old and predates your graphics hardware.

Why doesn't it recognize your graphics card? We need to see your
/var/log/XFree86.0.log

Chances are, if your X-Server is too old, you won't get a modern
graphics card to work with it. ie, the drivers are the problem, not
the card.

RE: [XFree86] Help

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
doing some research with http://yourvote.com/pci once again,

XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

totally outdated and unsupported!!!
you should upgrade to a newer version of XFree86 - really.

(II) PCI: PCI scan (all values are in hex)
(II) PCI: 00:00:0: chip 10de,01a4 card , rev b2 class 06,00,00 hdr
80
(II) PCI: 00:00:1: chip 10de,01ac card 10de,0c11 rev b2 class 05,00,00 hdr
80

you are running an nForce 1 based system.
you must ensure to have latest patches for your kernel applied
if you want to run hardware accellerated OpenGL without crashing
your system.

(II) PCI: 02:00:0: chip 10de,01a0 card 10de,0c11 rev b1 class 03,00,00 hdr
00

you are having the GeForce2 integrated grafics chipset.
i cant see anything else on PCI bus that has a grafics ID.
you might be forced to get either latest DRI development
beta drivers (for X4.3.0) or possibly try something from
your grafics hardware vendor's download area.

(EE) VGA(0): Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver.
(II) UnloadModule: vga
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

i am not finally sure - possibly only 4bpp and lower is
supported by vga drivers. at least i am sure VGA does not
offer 16 bpp, but maybe only 8bpp for 320x200 resolution.

you might have better success trying the VESA drivers.
