I jumped into the upgrade with both feet without taking the
time to really understand what I was doing and now cant seem to get to

I'm no expert on modern S3 cards, but I think you want to be using
an XFree86 version that's a few years newer than the one you are trying
to use, and I think you want to be using the savage driver rather
than the vga driver.

seemed to induce that kind of problems with me. At some point I had 4
different config files in X11... I wonder how init can determine which is the

I am able to run the X from the Linux machine itself (I am using Redhat
Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 2.1) but not from the remote machines. I
am using a software called X-manager from the remote machine. I can work
with the Linux server from the remote machine in text mode.
I don't known whether this is still the case: there used to be a logic in the madness:
