[XFree86] X crashing and not giving errors

I'm running slackware 8.1 on a box that has a geforce2 400mx (Cardexpert 32 mb vram) card and a compaq 171fs (17 inch) mointor on it. I've checked my logs, and I don't get any warnings or errors. X tries to start, but just gives me a black screen before it crashes out. I've had it working before
